Huh. I guess you learn something every day. I thought all SDs were 617 powered.

If the body is immaculate and the interior is immaculate, it's worth the price. $1200. would be better.

I'd buy it, but I would just put a 603 3.0 L in there...

Then of course in 1992 they started calling them 300SD again but put the 350 engine in. That's the one that has baffled me more than any other naming issue.

I have no idea why they did that, but in 1994 when MB changed how they named there cars it became the S350D.

The 350SD is a rare car, only 2,700 made for the 1991 model year. I'd love to get my hands on one I love the way the SWB W126 drives.

Assuming the 300SD is a W126 it should be straightforward.

I wonder if you can hook up the 617 to the 350SD oil cooler under the left headlight. You might have to use the 617 radiator to avoid customizing radiator hoses and that $$$ lower hose of the 350.

You'll need an ice cube relay in place of the Klima relay unless you plan to keep the 350 compressor with speed sensor.

No idea how to get the tach to work if it's a pre-85 617. Maybe you can adapt the 350 flywheel sensor to an older 617.

I wonder if it will glow properly with a missing glow plug. I suppose you can leave one hanging

Harnesses won't mate but there isn't that much wiring to contend with.

Would you care to expatiate on the harness incompatibilities? I am principally concerned with the cars ability to start and run. I am already planning on moving all of the cooling stuff over to the 350. I suppose that the glow relay would work. I am completely unfamiliar with whatever you said about the Klima relay. If you are talking about the AC, that is not a big deal. I can live without AC for now. Will the Harness click into the 617 starter motor? Thanks.

The harness connectors are different and many wires go to different locations. The oil alternator and pressure sender might be the only things in the same place. There aren't that many wires so I wouldn't call it a big deal.

The typcial 617 starter is on the passenger side while the 603 starter is on the driver side. The connectors might mate but I doubt the wires have enough slack for it to be a plug-n-play deal.

The Klima relay operates the AC compressor.

got it

Well gents, I have acquired the 350SD (Finally). It is prettier than I remember. (Black on black with grey headliner in the interior) I will be attempting the swap this weekend. I have a friend helping me out. I will be parting out the drivetrain (what is left of it anyways).

Any helpful hints on engine removal would be helpful. (Esp 617 most of my experience is with domestic motors and aircooled VWs) How far does one have to strip the motor/transmission to remove it?

I have acquired the use of a load leveler and a roof-mounted hoist. Again, consider this an open invitation for your two cents-or whatever change you may have.

Sure you don't want to buy a decent short-block 3.5? Pay me $75? Got to be easier than making such a nice car so slow and noisy.

Perhaps I was not clear. All suggestions that would help me attain my goal of putting a 617 300sd drivetrain into a 350SD. The noise does not bother me at all and I have never been a speed demon...ever. I have also heard some pretty unflattering things about the 3.5.

Well boys, Swap went great, lots of bolt up. I will keep you posted. I still have to bolt up the peripherals and work out some minor wiring issues, but otherwise, just great.

I am not sure if anybody is still interested in this thread, but I continue in the hope that my experiences will benefit the next crazy bloke to try it.
Today I screwed the motor down to the mounts and hooked up the tranny linkage-no mods required. The park/neutral switch clicked in as did what I believe to be the speedometer sensor. I believe that all of the vacum components will work after some minor mods. The glow plug relay is not really a problem.. I will simply move the 617 harness and relay over. The power feed for the relay is the same. The 603 harness comes out very cleanly and appears to be independent. The driveshaft and all peripherals must be completely swapped from the donor car. I am hoping that the ECU controls the ABS only...
The alternator harness is a one for one and is easily connected. I am getting a little bit more ambitious and might try to figure out how to get the AC compressor to work. The coils are in perfect shape and the system held gas for three years without being used. It seems a shame to not use them. The 603 oil cooler could probably used, but it would require custom lines. The 617 drops in anyways. I will be using the 617 cooling system if I can find a way to get the reservoir to mount firmly. I may do an unholy blending of the two and use the 603 reservior. That is all I have for now.

This is a conversion that I would want. The early 617 motor is bulletproof and the later 126s have much nicer seats and so forth.

Glad you did it.

Now if it were mine I would go ahead and put in a stick. (actually probably only when the tranny takes a dump!)
