Emergency actions for sls rupture
I have a slight leak in my sls hardline (85 300td). I need to take off for the summer and I don't know if I'll be able to repair this leaking hardline. However, I need to drive my car, So my question is this: If I have a significant rupture in my sls line and can't maintain fluid what should I do? I figure I don't want to run the pump if its dry for fear of seizing the pump which I assume would be costly to replace and might seize the engine too(??). So what would suggest as a sound long-term (a few months) repair. Can I simply loop the ouptut line from the pump right back into the top of the reservoir or will this damage anything? Thanks For the help, I just like to be prepared for the worst.

If you aren't going to have weight in the rear and don't mind the bouncing you could rig up an immediate return line to the pump so it still lubes itself. You just wont have the support in the rear.

I replaced an SLS line in my 80 300D Euro sedan -- pain in the butt! Is the line rotted through? If so, I'd consider cutting the bad section out, flaring the ends, and replacing the bad section. You can fine metric line and couplings online. I may have a small piece or two of the metric line leftover in the garage, but I can't guarantee that. In the meantime, are you keeping a jug of hydraulic fluid in the trunk? Many folks have used regular old fluid from a farm & Fleet or similar -- others insist that the MB stuff is the only way to go. I would think that the generic stuff would be better than dry, though!
Good luck...

Just wondering what makes the SLS lines "rupture". I can see may be leaking at the fittings but even that why would it happen if you don't mess with it. Knock on wooed, the SLS lines of my 80 TD seems to be pretty tight.
Is it the salt on the road that causes hard lines to go?

The lines are rotted, pobably due to road salt.
JT20- how would you rig that return. From the pump back to the reservoir?
