What's the best way to firm up shifts???

I have an 87 300d W124 that shifts nice and tight when the throttle is half or more, but less than half seems a little too soft and slow for my taste.

I'm assuming tilting the vacuum control on the IP towards a higher throttle would do the trick. Am I missing anything?
thanks!
Nick

You cannot adjust the VCV on the 603 without getting into "problems". Although it appears possible, you'll find that you'll get a massive flare.........intermittently. Strange as hell and unexplainable.

What I did accomplish was to adjust the screw on the bottom of the amplifier. You'll need a 4mm socket and you turn the screw fully clockwise to lower the vacuum to the modulator...........slightly.

Yeah I've never messed with the VCV on this car. I have changed one of the original linkage ends. I suppose getting that linkage to the original spec is probably impossible without knowing what I was doing but it seems to drive fine. I'm not sure if this has an effect on the Trans Vacuum system or not. I'd guess it does.

But speaking of flare I get some weird flares when I floor it at times. For now I will adjust the amp and see if I can get some firmer shifting. Thanks for the quick tip Brian!

Brian,

Where is this screw located? I am curious to adjust mine. Thanks

Remove the amp.

There is a black cap on the underside. Pry off the cap. The screw (plastic) is beneath the cap. Be careful with it.

by the way... just in case you don't know about this yet, the amp is the purple flying saucer looking thing with vac lines going to and from it. It's mounted on the driver side fender well in the engine compartment.

Go with B C on tranny questions...

Go with B C on tranny questions...(until i get around to doing one
..) B. C is THE MAN

there is one (IM) Poster who once told me that TRANS-X would solve my problems. It sure would if it came with a set of parts to replace my failed transmission pump but no bottle does that...

How so? Just loosen the two screws and twist it to where you want it. Much easier than adjusting the VCV of the pre 85 models.

When it's not adjusted per the FSM, it causes extreme flaring. It's happened to both Dave and myself. Adjust it ad-hoc at your own risk.
