How to set the idle speed???

What's the procedure for raising my idle speed a bit. My engine shakes sometimes at idle and if I can raise it a hair I think the problem will go away. How do I go about it?

Hmmm. A bit confused still. Do I need to mess with the bowden cable?? So adjust the idle screw and nut but which way pushes the idle up or down? Does the car need to be running and is park a good gear to do it in or do I need to be in neutral? Thanks

Park, just adjust the screw with the nut on the side of the pump. Do not tighten it much, it can break off if you are hard on it.

Adjust the screw. Sounds easy. It's too tight for a screwdriver....How in gods name do you loosen the nut? My hands and tools can't seem to get a grip on it....Thanks.

Loosen the 14mm lock nut at its base.

You need a long extension. I used a one about two feet long and it made the job easy. Be gentle, or you will trash your pump.

I can't figure out a way to loosen the nut. I'm obviously no mechanic and this is frustrating..

Right is tight and left is loose, just like most every other nut and bolt.

I use a 14mm Cows foot wrench on the end of a 3/8" extension and a 3/8" Rechet wrench. Us a Crows foot that is like the open end of a combination wrench not a Flare Nut type Crows foot as there will not be enough room. Got them from Sears.

X2!

Just remember to check the linkages to make sure that the stop lever will shut off the car. I had to lengthen the linkage to get it to work once I upped my idle speed on the 300SD.

Agreed; also you want the IP throttle lever to make contact with the idle stop screw and not "hang" off of the linkage. I disconect the linkage rod to that is attatched to the throttle arm, adjust the idle; next I re-adjust the linkage rod and pop it back on.

actually the stop lever doesn't shut the car off. It gets close but won't kill it. Do I need to adjust that before my idle speed? Thanks for all the help.
