Alternator ... again.

Been reading posts and realizing my alt my be mising pieces.? The engine manual and FSM @ Pauldrayton.com suck as references for the alt.

What are the the appendages to the alternator on the 123's - does it matter if they are missing?

I have read about the OVP.

???

You should have
1) Voltage regulator (thing that attaches with two phillips head screws and had a round metal part to it)

2) Noise supressor (square thing with a three inch tail that plugs onto a blade sticking out of the alternator.) You might not have this...

If the alt is stock a black plug with three wires that connects the alternator to the car

That's it.

I know what you mean. my 83SD came to me with a generic alternator, and it had no removable regulator or capacitor on it.
kinda a meek looking thing actually. click the buy parts link at the top of the page and order yourself a nice shiny new bocsh alternator. go for the 80 or higher model from a similar year gasser if you have an aftermarket radio or if you just want more capabilities from it at idle...
or are you talking about the adjustment bolt combo that's on the bracket?

^^ no, just the plastic encased electronics on the back of the alt. I have a spare with two black appendages, but the one on the car has nothing..? and some wierd cover over the back of it. I should probably just swap it.
Are they merely regulators and surge protection - or necessities for charging the system?
