Think you are going to have to bite the bullet Craig. Give Mike a call at Metric motors. 800-622-6867.

He is a real nice guy and will fix you right up . you are looking at $6000.00 for a new one. 4 yr 50,000 mile warranty. I drove down to L.A, and picked mine up. seems like the shipping wasn`t that bad as I remember.

Charlie ☺

Probably the best plan, I should check and see if they will sell me a long block without the IP (mine is still pretty new). Everything else on the engine is probably due for replacement anyway. I will probably let my indy pull the engine and source one from metric (unless there's a big price difference; then I'll buy the engine and just pay for the labor).

Sounds like a broken ring.

Time to give Metric Motors a call!

They usualy include an IP? I'd keep yours since it wasn't replaced that long ago.

I wonder what they would charge to rebuild that motor, vs a reman.

craig, if you order it and you are going to install it they might knock off 10% off the price. that would be the mark up the shop would add, plus might not have to pay sales tax. then there is a $400.00 core charge for the head if it is bad. mine was, crack @ # 3 cyl.

we went to the bank to get the money, and when we got back mike installed the dip stick, and turbo drain pipe in the pan and threw in a valve cover, mine was cracked. also bought a Vacuum pump at his cost. said I was going to replace it, he said let`s see what we can do.
I can`t say enough as to how we were treated.

I thought about that as well. The turbo might be draggy when the blades are contacting. Or you are just hearing it coming up to speed after it stopped. Since the gyro force is not well established at that point it could tend to run ofset for a moment. When the engine is cold you might want to see how much play is in the bearings and with a small mirror check for any contact points if bearings are real sloppy. At a Quart every 200 miles it may not be really saturated with oil yet some wetness should be present. If bone dry I agree it is not a possibility. Yet nothing in the engine can make a noise like a card on wheel spokes at lower rpms that I can think of. Not so sure at really elevated rpms.

I'll check out the turbo too, but I still need to do the compression test to see if it's an internal engine problem.

Not yet, I was out of town all week so I haven't done anything with it. I'll get my indy to take a look sometime this week... then I'll start shopping for an engine.

I don't remember your motor's history? Has it had a head gasket yet?

They tend to wear out at around 300K in my experience.
It seems possible that these symptoms might be from that.

Nope, it's never had the head off AFAIK. I'll have it diagnosed this week. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will just be a head gasket, but I'm not counting on it.

Update

Well, the engine is officially dead. The #1 compression is about 100 psi (the rest seem to be around 250), and the #1 is blowing-by about 80% on a drop test (very little through the intake or exhaust, mostly through the rings). I'm surprised it was running as well as it was with those numbers. Hopefully, I will have a replacement engine installed within a week or two.

Sorry to hear that the worst scenario has occurred, Craig.

I suppose that we'll have to say that Mercedes 5 cylinder engines only go 435K and not quite the 500K that is typically claimed...............

Well, the real "worst case scenario" would have been getting stuck 1500 miles away in NC, at least it got me home.

We will have to alert everyone on ebay immediately.
