Question My fuel gauge sender copper wire is broken...

...would this explain my random on-off reserve light?

I have my sender apart. The wire thats broken is the thicker copper one, not the ones that the float ride on.

If I just cut this copper wire, will this make my reserve light go off permanently? Is there a way to solder it back on, or should I 'cut and run' so to speak...

I wont miss the reserve light too much as long as the sender works well...

thanks, dd

did you guys stretch the wire out to reach? or did you replace with another wire? mine seems like it wont quite make it to the pin attachment point - it broke right above the solder joint.

what happens if i cut the wire out altogether?

I soldered mine back using a tab of copper I cut from a sheet to bridge the gap. The wire was too short to reach without the tab. It works great now.

Cool! I'll do that then. I can always slice it later, or grab a new sender from the junkyard. Holy cow those are expensive new!

Had exactly this problem a couple of days ago. With half a tank of diesel the reserve light was on, or flickering on and off.

Rather than stretch the existing copper wire - which had snapped near the top solder connection, I replaced it using a piece of 30 SWG magnet wire that I had lying around. But any regular copper wire of similar gauge will work.

Took about 15 minutes to fix.

there are just two screws near the front of the first aid box.

you need a 46mm socket to remove the sender. im sure you could hack it open with a SAE socket, but having the right size makes it easy.

I took mine apart and cleaned it. Still wont read all the way to empty line. The Low fuel warning light works at least now. Should it read all the way to the bottom line? I ran out of fuel with the guage still reading 1/4 tank yesterday. Paul

Magnet wire is an insulated electrical conductor, usually copper or aluminum insulated with a thin enamel coating - that when wound into a coil and energized creates a useful electrical field. 90% of all electrical energy requires modification through the use of magnet wire to be of use.

Magnet wire coils are used in electric motors, transformers, relays, solenoids, radio tuning coils, speakers, microphones, etc....
