Bio-diesel eating fuel filter, pic enclosed

Here is a peek at what BD can do to a plastic filter, you might notice the caved-in end of the end, as well as the guts melting ...

I keep a few of those plastic filters on hand since they really should be changed at LEAST every 6 months, but every 4 is better! That's not bad though and I would get the plastic filters that have the fine metal mesh inside. These filters won't last forever regardless!

Looks like the BioD is cleaning out some crud in your tank. It's amazing how much junk is in #2. Hopefully, you won't have as much as I did. Recently, I had to have the screen in the tank cleaned and the tank drained and cleaned.
From the looks of that filter, it was pretty clogged.
How long has that filter been on? I've run a similar looking filter without any problems but it did get changed probably every 5000 miles.

I've had the same pre-filter on my wagon for the last 20k miles running biodiesel. Are you sure it's not the rngine heat melting the plastic. Are you heating your biodiesel at all for winter use? If you are then I would remove the plastic prefilter, because that filter isn't designed to deal with heated fuel.

That put me laughing out loud.

All in all, I think you need a new prefilter. At $2 each, go ahead and replace it.

Some primary filters don't work with biodiesel

I run B100. The primary filters that have a plastic screen inside work great. Once I got a filter with paper inside and it collapsed and cut off my fuel supply when running B100. When I go to the parts store I refuse to take those.

I replace both filters every 12,000 miles.

By the way, I keep a set of filters in the trunk at all times, just in case.

That's overkill for normal maintenance, unless you have an algae problem or consistantly dirty fuel. I've had my filter installed for a year and the screen is just about as clear as it was when it was initially installed. It may take years before they get clogged to the point that replacement is truly needed.

Isn't that caused by excess methanol in your brew?

I agree. My three have been on commercial B100 for most of the time I've owned them. I changed filters more often when the cars and I were new to biodiesel but it probably wasn't necessary and I never had a clogged filter. I keep an eye on the prefilter just in case and change both about once a year.

Jeremy
