Only turn engine in which direction ?

I keep reading "only turn engine in clockwise direction" (by hand)
but is that clockwise as you face it from the front, or the other way ?
Why is this important?
Thanks!

it's important due to the way the timing chain maintains slack with the tensioner. you don't want to overtighten, or loosen the chain enough to skip a tooth...

Clockwise while standing in front of the engine. (Tightening, like 79 said.)

You can also make the chain jump a tooth due to lack of tension going the other way.
