My first post !

Hey guys , I'm greg from just out side philadelphia , pa ... I just bought my first mercedes diesel , it's a 1983 300cd with 85K on the car ...rust free !
I come from a mechcanical back ground , mostly worked on american and japanese ...I love how these cars were just ahead of there time ...its a really cool car.
It dose have a few issue's , the motor was covered on grime , looks like injector seal washers and slight valve cover leak in the front ... thats about it for the leaks .
I also have a pretty hard first and second shift , from all the post you guys have on here that really gives me alot to work with .
My big question is where do you guys buy the parts for these diesel motors ?
I still have a account with my local parts house and they only have so much stuff ?
I need to get these injector seals ?
I was just looking at a injector , looks like a metal to metal mating surface ...is this correct , no seals ?
Thanks for all the great reading .

greg

Nice car! I understand anything rust-free in PA is unusual.

For parts, I use this site for big-ticket items and the local parts stores for little stuff like filters and glow plugs.

On the injectors, is the leak where the injector goes into the head, or is it higher up?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on a great find. That's a very classy color combo.

I second the Fastlane (click the Buy Parts tab at the top of the page) .

Spray down those inj's and confirm its not leaking from the braided return lines. Much more common than leaky inj's.

I seen what I thought was a bubble coming from the closest part of the injector , I de-gunked the whole motor and the first leak apeared around the injector area , well before the valve cover started to leak .
Then the valve cover started to leak , I know it's going to need a valve cover gasket , gives me a chance to check the valve clearance .
Whats the deal with the injectors , are they a taper to taper seat ?
I know I have the two area's to address , I also have a area on the lower passengers side , looks like a gromet for the return of the oil from the turbo ...it's down low up front .
That seems to be all my leaks at this time .
It really is a clean machine ...zero rust ...The car was in conneticut in a garage , original paint , had master cylinder and some vacume work done , its a really solid car .
I am near fairless hills ...small world !

Seems a bit unusual for an 85k car to have these types of leak of issues. Maybe you can give us some history of the car like for example why was the engine covered with grime. And if you know for a fact if the instrument cluster has never been opened....?

All the rubber area's are intact ...just seaping , I guess after 25 years even mercedes rubber starts to shrink and crack ?
It is a 25 year old car that has 85K ...no rust and everything works perfect , all the door seals are like new , sun roof works perfect .
Personally I thought 3 leaks was not a bad , but I guess it is for a mercedes ?
Valve cover gasket and a one gromet , I am still not sure on the injector sealing if its metal to metal or a seal , but I am assuming it is from the picks of the injectors with the taper seat .
It was one owner car ....the car is super clean , I have all the records , that car was in a garage for the past 3years .
The grime was a light coating of oil from the valve cover leak , was thin coat , I hate working on anything dirty !
Thanks

greg

You are correct, the gaskets and seals do get old and these engines tend to develop leaks due to vibration. All you can do is keep chasing them down and fixing them.

yes, metal to metal seal, but the injectors sit on discs that crush to a perfect seal, they are called heat shields on the parts search.
be sure when you go to pull the injectors, that you get the socket seated well, then POP the breaker bar with your palm, don't use steady pressure, or you could loosen the PC rings... NOT FUN!!!
the injector that is leaking most likely has carbon all over the threads and injector face, be ready with some PB blaster and get a set of dental pics, you will need them.
have fun with your AWESOME car.

To do the job correctlly should I replace the Heat Shields ? What is a PC ring ?
I am assuming I will need to replace the fuel return hoses , any special socket for removing the injectors ?
Once I have the injectors out any cleaning tips or any thing I should be looking for ?
Any pointers on this small job would be welcome .

Thanks guys .

Chances are you'll need to replace return lines. You could try to cut them shorter but these lines are inexpensive. Best to just replace.
Most would suggest getting the injectors pop-tested and spray pattern checked at a qualified bosch shop. Some would just replace the nozzles. Check the Diesel Giant's website for a good step-by-step write up on injectors (and other items).
Definitely replace heat shields (buy extras to have on hand).

btw - Turbo drain tube - I recommend placing grommet on tube 1st, then forcing grommet into upper oil pan. Force engine side in first to give easy access to the latter portion.

Nice looking vehicle.
