jt20-

Not to hijack your thread, but I may be buying a car in similar condition. Do you know if the car was run low on oil (and if so for how long, did it knock seize etc)? Was there any grooving or damage to the cam lobes?

Thank you, and good luck. I am following the thread with interest.

there was no knocking BG. I am not sure why the bearings went bad. The engine looks well-maintained (enough) from the inside. Bearing failure could be from accident -busted oil cooler and engine left running??? Or one short stint on low oil before the accident.

Camshaft looks great. just removed yesterday - lobes are unscathed but have some variance (prb from loose lashing) and bearings in the towers are typical for a cam.

I recall speaking to MB mechs and hearing

"well, lets consider the flow of oil from the pump... where does it go? (insert rhetoric here)..then finally it gets to the camshaft.. don't you think you will have damage there as well?"

NO. There is minimal stress in this area (compare to crank). Continually poor maintenance could could cause damage though

mine had to be a cause of intermittent trauma.

Was your crank gouged or out of round? How much was the new crank?

I have selected to regrind my original crank to the first oversize and use all original equipment. After talking to a few local machine shops, the expensive nitride hardening is often skipped with excellent results.

Often, the N/A engines eventually find turbos on them as well. As an upgrade, of course(?)

Two thoughts on "Your" Upgrade theory

1. NA engines have no Oil Jets to keep the pistons cool.
2. 'Cranks on NA engines not Nitrided.

"Turbo-ing" a NA is "Train Wreck Waiting to Happen".

Don't forget the oil pump.

I would certainly not suggest this to anyone. Simply claiming its plausibility.

your better off just getting a turbo engine, piston oil coolers, nitrided crank, sodium filled valve faster spinning starter.

He has a turbo engine, he just needs a crank.

Was the crank damaged?

cervan, do ever read the entire thread?

BG, yes, all 5 throws had bearing damage. Pretty minor considering what can happen. It is being turned this week.

car should be back together in 5 days.

then troubleshooting for then next 6-8 months (ha!)
