Jumpy Cruise, Bowden??

I have a very jumpy cruise control and I have replaced it w/ another cc actuator and I have also swithced out the cc amplifier twice, it is still jumpy.

Could it be that the bowden cable has gone bad??
Or, loose linkage??

Not bowden cable, doubt if it is linkage unless it needs greased. The only thing left that you didn't replace is the speedometer pickup.

I have noticed when my speedometer jumps around the cruise control is not steady. My speedometer only jumps when the car gets really cold below 25 deg F. After the interior warms up the speedometer stops jumping and cruise works fine. I need to pull the speedometer and clean and lube it. My ride is a 1985 300D with 240,000 miles.

How much "jumpy" do you have? Can you actually feel the jumps or is it more of a "wander," a failure to hold constant speed?

It is steady ever? My surges on declines (down hills), works great on flats and inclines (up hills). It was loose linkage in my case. I had some play in the Cruise Control Actuator linkage to throttle. Did a temp fix using polymer film and improved conditions greatly. I still have a little play in the throttle linkage that needs to be adjusted. The Ball and Cup linkage (The cups tend to wear).

Hope that helps. Good luck.

What and where is a speedometer pickup??

It is a very very noticable jump, so much that it throws my neck back and forth.

I have another acceleration related problem that I think has to do w/ loose linkages.

How do I know that my linkages are tight enough?? Is there any precision involved??

does the speedo needle jump? Mine has a kink in the cable and causes the needle to jump, since the CC uses a pickup on the speedo I assume the CC will try to adjust for the needle jump causing a cyclic throttle response from the CC actuator. my cruise is not very smooth but it is about the same as the needle jump. I hope it will be smooth once I pull another pickandpull cable

Mine used to jump until I tightened the nut on the actuator linkage. It was loose causing the rod to move and the actuator to try to correct it.
