Questions about the turbo

While I was just replacing the air cleaner mounts I began observing the turbo out of curiosity, as I haven't looked into this part much in the few months experience I have with diesels (or cars in general, for that matter.) Bear with me now, while I brutalize part names in description of what I see...

I noticed a short line that goes from the top portion to the bottom portion of the turbo, and the hose clamps on either end have chewed through nearly completely. This is a fuel line, correct? It says "fuel line 3/8" on it (I wouldn't have guessed that fuel goes through this portion of the car.) Anyhow, the part the line connects to on the bottom part of the turbo spins around freely, I'm wondering if this is normal (not the compressor wheel, directly beneath that.)

I could just be paranoid, but it seemed odd a part that has fuel running though it shouldn't be able to spin around like this.

Oh and while I'm typing, it's apparent to me that I need to replace the air cleaner bracket (what ever it's called, that the air cleaner sits on top of) as I have had to replace the 3 mounts several times. I was about to buy a new one, but I noticed the bracket in the car now isn't in the straight "T" shape as sold on this website. The figurative up-and-down line of the "T" appears to have been welded at a slightly different angle. Is this the norm for these kinds of brackets, or was the previous owner one of those "I modified it to make it better, when really I just made things worse" kinds of people?

Thanks for reading, thanks more for input, and thanks even more for putting up with vague descriptions.

-Geoff

geoff,

you need to replace that "fuel" line... it does not carry fuel it vents excess pressure that the turbo could build up so that you do not get into an over boost situation.

it goes to the waste gate and when the boost is too high the waste gae opens and vents a bit of the pressure off.

as far as the air cleaner bracket i can not help much.

The fuel line you are seeing is a pressure line that runs to the wastegate actuator and opens the wastegate when the turbo begins producing a specified amount of boost. It can be replaced with silicone line for better head durability. If it leaks your wastegate may not open properly and the turbo will create too much boost.

The bracket sounds like it has been poorly repaired in the past which is why it is at an angle.

I agree, the "fuel line" is a turbo Wastegate hose and if it has holes in it, it will blow oil all over the motor mount and engine shock (and everything else) on that side which will deteriorate the rubber.

The bracket for the air cleaner should look like the pics you saw. They are commonly welded to repair them, but it sounds like yours wasn't done well. If you've already replaced the rubber bumpers a few times, I would definitely get a new bracket.

Bahahaha

Okay, wow. So apparently the previous owner IS one of those people I spoke of earlier. There is some little (what's the complete opposite word of "innovation"?) every time I look further into the car. For example, when I first bought the car he had these clear green rubbery lines put in as return lines. To which I later discovered these lines are meant for RC cars!!!

... I wonder what else he has done to the poor car

And about the engine mount, that makes sense, as it seems my car has been shaking more and more in idle as of late. Looks like I got some research to do, money to spend, and work to do.

But that's why I bought a $400 Benz afterall
