Simple compression test question - '78 300D
Do you leave the injector heat shields in place while checking compression - OM617 non-turbo engine? Thanks.

Don't you generally compression test through the glow plug holes, not the injector holes?

I tried that - just couldn't get my gauge hooked up to 4 and 5 - this is actually easier and I was pulling and rebuilding the nozzles anyway.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but when I went to test cylinder 1, I think the heat shields blew out of some of the other cylinders and I didn't even notice (found several on the ground underneath and in the engine compartment).

Oh boy ,yes ,I think its happened to all of us,only some wont admit it.Youll need new ones ,thats recommended .Next time get a magnet stick and pluck em out,its easy enough .The wedge side goes down.

my tester makes a good seal at the top of the prechamber and I didn't use a heat shield when I tested mine and all seemed OK. I don't know why you would need to use them to do a compression test.
