Would this be worth doing?

Hey all, I was curious if anyone has ever seen the need or done a writeup on removing, disassembling, rebuilding, and installing a 123 hood star assy?
I just had to do this with mine & took a lot of pics along the way thinking it could be useful. One of my coworkers thought it would be humorous to pull up on my star and twist it 90* so it was "more aerodynamic".
After that it never would stay up stright and always listed to the left, until I repaired it yesterday. I wanted to pull up and twist his head 90* when I saw what he did...

From an old reply I made:

Quote:
If you took it ENTIRELY apart, you have a big mess (don't ask how). For starters you need to install the small spring (there are two) on the star and properly insert it on the small U bracket to hold the star down to the base. Once you see the other end of the spring jutting out, insert that through the larger U bracket, but it won't go through. You have to use long nose pliers to pull it hard (yank the star 90 degrees backwards to hold it). Then with luck (or a friend) put in the small peg that holds the small spring down. Once done, put the star back up.

But that's just half the story, you can't install it on the hood as the bracket will both be cupped together, you have to separate them. Now pull hard on the large U bracket downwards, twist it 90degrees so it rests on the elevated "platform" considering the star itself is upside down. Once you got it to hook on the platform, the star will be extremely hard to pull up out of the base (since the spring is now stretched). Now you can install it on the hood, make sure the smooth end of the platform faces forward, once done pop the hood open and look under the star, twist the large U bracket 90 degrees (forgot which way, you'll find out) until a large click will be heard.

Turning it 90 degrees may help slightly with aerodynamics, but it would not be very good for my aim.

Well, that depends....what if you're aiming for that good looking blonde walking down the sidewalk....lol

Really if anyone's interested in me doing this, it really wasn't that hard to do. The biggest trouble I had was that I was halfway paying attention when I tore it apart so I had to stop and rethink how it went together before I fixed it,lol.

It's not that bad at all once you get the hang of it.

I've rebuilt my good star myself. The original was ripped off, but that was the original with the larger base. So I saved the base and got a new star, installed the new star but wanted the original large base back (the dirt marks showed) so I dug up the old base, got my second ripped star (this time, the star itself was left dangling, the spring broke). So I mended the original base with the new star, and it's on my car now.

I can Just barely make out what is typed on that pic...
try turning the camera or the paper so there is nothing in the frame but the paper, and you will not only be able to focus better, but you can get the image MUCH larger with the same pixels... also, try switching the camera to grayscale or B&W mode, then switchng to higher resolution, you will be able to get a Much larger image on here without color bumping up the image size...
