It doesn't sit right with me. Seems wrong, unethical/immoral. Legal, sure it is.

It think I'd tell them what was wrong, or offer to fix it for $100. Nothing wrong with payment for a diagnosis/repair

I didn't have a clue what was wrong, bought it sight unseen.

My '91 was the same way. Didn't have a key, $25 later I have another gorgeous W126, HVAC works, starts right up.

Well, we played with it today, took it out of the garage (under its own power) and let it run a while, a LOT of blue exhaust was being emitted, and its way way down on power, and emits even more blue if you make it do any work. Feels like a 240. Engine runs "ok" but makes clanking noise....it goes away somewhat at higher rpms but puts out a LOT of exhaust. You can smell the oil burning its so bad. It also leaks badly....(no wonder it was 4qts low!!) it dripped all over the driveway and such. So we stuffed it back in the garage and are now looking for a new motor. Preferably we want both a motor and trans, but will take just the motor if its all thats available. Anyone have a good used (below 250k preferably) 617?

So I am guessing it has a broken ring on one of the cylinders for it to do that?

Its all blue smoke? Before you give up I would pull the head or atleast injectors/pc and inspect the the cylinders from there if possible.

Yes it seems to be all blue/black. We're thinking its about time to retire the engine with 313k on it....I suppose I could pull the injectors/pre-chambers though. We'll see....for now though we want a new engine.

A neighbor of mine sold a very early T bird that he could never get going for a hundred bucks back in the early 70's. The guy that bought it looked it over, Piddled around with it, came back the next day with a brand new battery and some fresh gas slapped it in, cranked it right up... and drove it away...

ARe you sure it does not have a broken rod? It sounds like it might have one. I would take a good look at the lower parts of the block for a broken place.

Beautiful car though!

Let me know if you decide to sell it.

I second (or what is it? 20th?) the nice part,... but a cracked piston is FARRRR from unheard of in a 617. the upper ring lands shatter all the time from limited driving and carbon building up between the PC and the cylinder wall... DG says it's cause driver's don't use DP often enough... Me? I say Italian tune up baby!!!
anyway, good luck on the motor, Whunter is in your kneck of the woods, perhaps he's willing to help ya!

Just a thought, but if it's pouring out blue smoke, be sure to do a compression test BEFORE you pull the head... it could be a turbo seal dumping oil into the motor... then before you pull the head/PC, pull the turbo, or the intake and see if it's full of oil...

triple square and a breaker bar, 10mm bolt to pull out the idler gear. and a few other things. but if your using oil that badly your rings are probibally shot or you have a horendous headgakset leak. (i could have that head off in an hour with air tools.)

cervan, I will take you up on that (*1 hour head off with air tools) ... maybe for a very experienced tech, or somebody that doesn't wanna put it back on... but if you are labeling and methodical with the tear down, 1 hour couldn't cut it... could it? what with the timing chain issues, the cam, the exhaust and turbo... all the injectors/lines etc... I say 2.5 hours minimum... in a hurry.
that's not to say it couldn't be done... just I wouldn't

Wouldn't this prevent it from reving up? I can rev it to 3k with no issue except blue smoke....the clacking isn't even very loud at that speed.

Since the motor/trans have so many miles and its a lot of work to take the engine apart, we'll likely do a swap and then I will do surgery on the engine to find out what happened. Many good spares will be had off of it too....everything except the lower end of the engine.
