Bought a MINT 1982 300SD for $700 today!!! Lots of pictures! (needs engine though)

Thats right, yesterday a 1982 300SD popped up on craigslist here locally, so I went and looked at it, BEAUTIFUL car! Engine has 313,164 and cracked a pison, so the owner did not want it anymore. We bought it for $700, and had it flatbedded to our house, only an 8 mile trip!

It has new 15" 8 hole MB wheels + brand new tires
It has Euro Lights + a spare set of Glass lenses in the trunk
It has a spare monovalve repair kit
Free weather radio
NO RUST ON THE CAR AT ALL, never driven in the winter!
Tinted windows
Interior is almost perfect blue leather!
Free high end radar detector
Original Med Kit
Recently installed perfect trailer hitch
All bushings on suspension and steering are in excellent shape
Sits level
Mint MB exhaust

Overall the car is incredibly nice

The engine is dead, and will need to be replaced (or rebuilt), so we are looking for a used 617 turbo....anyone have one?

Two power window motors are dead, one has a bad regulator, and one works fine. Drivers seat bottom has collapsed spring box.

Other than that its perfect. Here are a ton of pics!

Wow, that's nice. How do they know it has a "cracked piston"? Have they had the head off? I don't think I have heard of that failure mode for a 617 (or any engine) before? What are the symptoms the engine has?

You know there's a "finder's fee".

You paid for a set of euros and scrap value of the rest of the car you know. Great color combo too, I'm partial.

Next thing is to pull the head and see if it's really terminal, or start with a compression test, or see if one was done at G.A.S.

All that he knew was that he had a lot of crankcase pressure, could be several things.

Good Lord, the paint on that thing looks A W E S O M E !! I had an '83, same color combo but w/o leather.

Good luck getting it back on the road. The car looks amazing. Enjoy!

Beautiful car! If I were you, I'd buy a Metric engine and throw it in there -- the car would probably outlive you at that point. Such a mint car deserves a mint engine.

They took off the valve cover and did a compression test at G.A.S.....they said it has a cracked piston.....or so they claim. They're not exactly known for awesome service......I suppose we'll take the head off and have a look see...no point not to....maybe its just a badly blown head gasket?

Either way, the price was right, and we'll get it on the road again.

And to think, we almost bought a less-than-mint (no where near like this car) 240 on Tuesday for over 3x the price! Wshew! This thing will ROCK when its finished.

I don't remember anything about a "finder's fee"

NICE.

NFW is that a cracked piston. Obviously the motor is either dead or close to it but a cracked piston on a 617 is unheard of...

Oh well, worth a try ;~)

I'm probably going to have some SEM mixed to touch-up my leather, if I do I'll let you know so we can do both cars.

I'm hoping that it will be something repairable, makes a better story, and like you say, no reason not to pull the head, probably will want to keep it, the IP, the turbo etc. for spares anyway.

Crank it with the fuel shutoff down, if there's a cylinder with no compression, you'll hear it in the cranking.

Might be that the oil somehow got overfilled, possibly a fuel leak into the oil or something, just driving down the highway and it starts puking oil out of the dipstick just sounds more like either overfilled crankcase hitting the crank or maybe a clogged breather system pressurizing the crankcase. I'll bet lunch that it isn't a cracked piston, call GAS and get the compression numbers.

delectable car.

"Mint" is a strong word, and mint cars don't have bad engines.

That having been said, it is obviously a lovely car, well worth fixing.

I like the W140 wheels on that, I put them on my W126 but with the W220 center caps.

Well worth the $700 price that it cost.

Diesel fuel rose to $4.89 a gallon today, in this town today, though in Northern California. Chevron Diesel is being served to you with Techron, though, if that fact helps you swallow the bad news.

Well I went out and played around with it, the dipstick is from a 240d...(orange right?) but is the same as a 300 dipstick (we compared)...its a PAIN to get in, looks like the tube is bent....and you really have to jam it in. Engine was about 4.2 quarts low.....I wonder if THAT was the reason it had the problems! I added a gallon of rotella, my dad held the stop lever and I began cranking...it immediately started! At a VERY low idle due to the stop lever, so he let off of it, and it came right up to a steady smooooth idle. However, there is a pronounced "clanking" sound when its running....you can recreate this sound yourself by tapping the end of a 3/8" ratchet handle on the front of your power steering pump, it sounds almost exactly like that. However, with the engine idling around 700-750ish....the tap is maybe once per second? Other than the tap it runs very smooth and nice, exhaust was not blue, just the normal black/grey smoky diesel color and smell, its got oil pressure, and there is not really much blowby at all....less than my car has!

Is the tapping rod knock? Did running it low on oil like that damage something? Who knows what this guy did to it.....

Should I try cracking the injector lines one by one and seeing if the knock is from a particular cylinder?
