Diesel prices want me to store up my 300SD

Yes, i have heard predictions that diesel will hit all high record for $5 per gal, 4.09 right now is a real pain in my wallet when it gives 18 mpg but i am getting me some crazy performance (i bought it that way), is there a cure in getting better mpg, or else i have to drive my gas sipping 1985 BMW 318i that i get very cluster fobic...

thx

figure that gasoline will be about $8/gal in the winter season. Surely by the spring. Diesel of course will maintain it's out of whack relationship.
It's the new world order.

Clusterfobia in the BMW?

Take the instruments out of the Mercedes and wire them up to the BMW. Problem solved.

This sort of thing makes me want to trade the 240D (currently 20-22 mpg) for something like a Suzuki Samurai and be done with it.

I figure with some injector work, I can probably get 25-30 mpg, but if that doesn't pan out then I don't really know what I'm going to do long-run.

Any idea why the benz is only getting 18? Even with performance-oriented modifications you should still be able to get high 20s if you keep your foot out of it. If you displace half of your fuel with WVO (in a well-designed, heated system of course), you will get about 55mpg of diesel, if you displace 3/4 you will get above 100mpg of diesel fuel. Multiply that by about 1.5 for a VW 1.6NA, about 1.8 for a tdi.

EDIT: it ain't easy displacing 75% of your fuel with WVO, but it is possible.

I agree that the SD should not be getting 18mpg. In my worst cases, driving like I stole the thing and running it flat out on the highway, I got over 24mpg and I was regularly getting 26.5 in that car doing a mix of highway and city drving. I would look real hard at the SD to make sure you are not leaking fuel. Look under the car at the hoses coming from the tank.

If you are interested in mpg, why not keep the SDL? Mine is averaging 28.something doing the same driving that I was doing inthe SD but with no ALDA

Fix the fuel leak and check the accuracy of your odometer.
