Straight Piped 300cdt

Hey guys , Looks like I'm going to need a exhaust system pretty soon . I have 3 trucks that are straight piped cummins turbo diesels ...they run cooler , spool up fast and sound great .
I did find a few sites that do custom stainless ...I really did not like the $800 + price on a stainless system , and my exhaust dose not have a front muffler on my system .
I will proibly buy a stainless down tube and fab my own system ...I have a nice Tig welder ....and skills !
I would like to keep the pipe as straight as possible ...anyone ever run there exhaust staright down the center , since the rear is a solid mounted center section ?
I was thinking 2.500 dia. 308 or 316 stainless tubing , what ever I can get my hands on .
Any info on what guys area running would be welcome .

Thanks

greg

Straight pipe, no muffler, no resonator. Not sure of the size.

Same here. Mine is a 2.5" pipe from the downpipe on back.

How dose it sound ? I would figure the inline 5 should sound pretty good . I know from my other diesel systems the mounts for exhaust tubing are pretty important ...really good rubber isolated mounts are very important , othere wise you can feel the diesel engine viberate through out the whole body .

Question: does "straight-piped" mean no muffler?
If so, don't most states require a muffler?
Is there a performance benefit to not having a muffler--does it improve acceleration?

In some states a turbo is considered a muffler since it is a significant restriction to exhaust flow.

Ok, I was wondering. My 240D is already pretty loud with a muffler. I was thinking without one I'd be like a semi rolling through town!

What does a resonator really do? I thought about pulling the cat(more power and MPG) since they don't test emissions in FL.

That's the idea

I'm running stock exhaust on the 300D. The 240 has one muffler, but I think it's supposed to have two. Sounds good to me.

I'm really seriously thinking of trying this on mine. The exhaust is so stupid simple, can just unbolt it at the flange even with the front edge of the doors, and build a copy of it from there on back - minus muffler and resonator. It should be pretty cheap to using some of the semi-mandrel bent pipe pieces that NAPA sells.

Then, if its too loud, adding a cherry-bomb glasspack later to tone it down will be easy enough. Taking the stock exhaust off as one piece and hanging on to it, also means it will go back on really easy if it doesn't do anything for mileage, etc.

At WOT it is a little loud with the windows down but not enough to annoy me inside the cabin.
I like it when I shut the car down, get out and you can hear the turbo spinning through the exhaust.

I deleted the resonator and muffler and put on a less restrictive exhaust...and it was too loud, it set off car alarms as I'd drive past.... I'd guess that almost half of the noise was from the intake. I put a "hi-flow muffler' on and that helped keep down the noise.
