Weird Idling=stall?

I own a 10981 300TD turbodiesel...

My car wouldn't start for a couple months after what turned out to be a simple fix(I guess the "lift pump" became disengaged and had to be tightened and the fuel lines purged of air). Needless to say, Iam nowhere near a mechanic and I am trying to learn!

It was running better than ever since I had just replaced the glow plugs prior to the above incident.

The other day I started it, noticed it was idling roughly and kind of "gasping", then when I backed it out of the garage, it died. I started it again, same scenario. Started it again, gave it some gas for a few seconds and it did not die this time but continued to idle roughly, I did not drive it to work. Later in the day after work, I tried starting it again, this time it did not seem to be idling too roughly but I did not drive it around the block to make sure.

I am a little concerned... Does this sound like a problem to any of you more experienced folks? Thanks for any suggestions or help you could give me!!!

Sudden rough starting/running is usually just one or more bad glowplugs. Does a 10,981 300TD even use glowplugs?

Read through these guides and search the forum for "glow plugs" and you'll find what you need.

If you let it sit and idle does it smooth out after 30 seconds or so?

I just replaced the glow plugs a couple of months ago, could it be that they are already bad?

It seems like it would drive fine, no weird sounds or anything, when i put the gas on... just when I started it and let it idle for a while. It was not idling for over 2 minutes, but it did seem to settle down after awhile. Later in the day when I started it again, it seemed to idle fine.

ok.... well i went to start it this morning... it started... idled a couple seconds and slowly and roughly rumbled to death. I repeated this 3 times... trying to get life into it... Then the crazy thought occurred to me that maybe my gas gauge is not functioning correctly and I was out of fuel? I have never run out of fuel in my life and I don't really know the symptoms... does this sound like a fuel issue??? the gas gauge says that i have a little less than a quarter tank.

A worn out rack dampener can give the same symptoms.

How does it perform when fully warmed up?

usually the car runs very nicely when warm... it doesnt idle rough at all... its a nice ride...

however, i cant get it to idle more than 20 seconds right now... it just cuts out. it will restart though... and dies again after a few seconds...

What Glowplugs did you use? Only use Bosch or Beru. The rest have a life of a few days to a few months.

Also, when were the filters last replaced?

Have you taken it around the block since this idling issue started?
Mine will idle rough and sometimes stall when the primary fuel filter is starting to get plugged. When this is happening I can usually rev the engine and it sounds OK, but it won't want to idle.
If it is the filter, it won't have the normal amount of power when driven. Take it for a short spin around the block.

it's nice to know that MB is still making Diesels that far in the future... I hope you find the problem.

i literally cant get it in gear fast enough to rev the engine up... let alone drive it aroud the block

there was air getting into the fuel system recently, the lift pump(or whatever its called) was open and letting air in. an acquaintance of mine who is a diesel mechanic(but not a mbz diesel mech.) said that i would have to replace the lift pump in the next couple years because it didnt look very good.
