gear ratio question
Does anyone know the gear ratios in the 124?
Also, the rear end ratio? I am looking to have some fun and make an rpm / speed graph. I can't find this info online anywhere : ( |

If it is just for fun do this
If your tachometer and speedometer are correct you should be able to figure out the transmission gearing after you figure the rear axle ratio like this. Have both rear wheels off the ground. Make a good mark on the tire, (or on the half shaft). you are going to watch as you turn the drive shaft, by hand just forward of the differential. Mark it all very plain with chalk. Now start turning the driveshaft. If you turn the driveshaft 3 times to rotate the wheel once, the ratio is 3 to 1. Rarely will it come out so nice and even, so normally you will have to do a little interpolation to come close to the right number. Less then 3 turns will put it in the 2. something ratio, like 2.94 or 2.88 or 2.74. Over 3 turns will make it 3. something like 3.07 3.14, or 3.24. The 3.24 would be almost 3 and one quarter turns, just maybe an inch or two short.

The 124 diesels in the US were all 2.65:1 I believe. There might be a change to 2.88 in '92/'93, the '87 was 2.65 though.
