Anyone know about the OM315 Engine?

I'm looking at getting a vehicle that has an OM315 installed. Supposedly it's 3.6L, 4 cylinder, 80hps. It's a 1973 508D van.

Any comments about the reliability, how easy (or impossible) parts are to find, etc.?

I sorta-kinda understand that horsepower and displacement need not be directly related... but what kind of 3.6 liter engine only makes 80 horsepower? I mean, my 603 is a 3.0 liter making... i have no idea, whatever stock horsepower is. Around 120 maybe?

603 is turbocharged? or are we talking the I6's found in the e300D (16 and up?) I cant recall engine codes right now (606/603...)

Sounds like the early 617's, 300d's from around 1976 were only 90 something hp.

Beats me. I was wondering the same thing.

Maybe it puts out such low HPs because it's very, very low-revving, and just has a LOT of torque?

Hi there,
The 508 you're looking at will have an OM314 fitted. It's a 4 cyl diesel. Depending on the exact spec it has DIN output of 80hp, SAE output of 88hp. Torque is 266Nm (23 kpm) at a limited maximum rpm of 2800. These are light truck engines good for a zillion million thousand kilometers at scary speeds of up to 90/100 kph (downhill).
Also fitted to some 70s farm machinery and boats (in Europe anyway).

603 is a turbocharged engine that came around in the 86 model year and departed when the 606 no-turbo came to being. That same 606 got a turbo in 1998.

Closer to 148 if you have the trap recall taken care of. 120 and it would be a slug.

Thanks for the specs!

My estimate of plodding home from Cali at 55 mph seems to have been right :p

Thanks for that info, I couldn't remember the numbers and was taking a ballpark guess.

Cool, one vote for it being good.

Does anyone know where I can buy parts for it? I found one guy who has a ton of parts but he's just a private seller.

80hp in a 22-ft. dual rear wheel vehicle, and is probably over 8,000 lbs when loaded, is terrifying. Especially in a manual tranny car from the '70s. Is it fuel injected or carb'd?

What does it mean for a transmission to be "4 speed (plus granny)" do you think? Does that mean 5 forward speeds but one is strange somehow?

try 150ish, the turbocharged 617 made 120 hp.

Haha you made a funny.
Believe it or not, I've actually upgraded both my diesels to a twin-carb setup. Does wonders for the performance.

That reminds me, the E300 needs some new spark plugs...

2800 rpm? Man, that's gonna be exciting to drive

This is about what we have in our shops transporter, it's a '77 307D with a OM616 (with Klappenstutze!!) and 4-speed manual. 65 tired hp of unknown mileage, fully loaded 7,700lbs.
Trying to listen to the radio is quite fruitless when going uphill, engine screaming in 3:d gear, doing 30mph.

Granny is a very very low gear, typical in trucks that haul heavy loads. Granny gets the truck rolling. The engine is usually screaming at 3 to 5 mph.

It's nick named granny because of how sssllooowww the take off is.

I drove an old gasser bob tail that had granny gear. It was not needed when the truck was empty.

I guess that was a dumb question. I didn't really think about it before I asked :p

Think it'd be okay going on the Interstate from San Diego to Orlando?
