I would have thought the 85 would work but not the 86. I don't know....just guessing.

Last year another member realized an 85 wouldn't work after he got it home so don't feel too bad. They have a whole different shape/mounts. So, I believe (and someone else here will KNOW) that the ones with ABS starting in 85 won't fit your car. Up here I've never seen one at a wreckers but I think the 82-83 500SE and SEC , and 560SE SEC will also work. Like someone (was it F.I.?) said you want to look at V8 gassers.

Now I'm not sure, The right one IS BIGGER but still has the four studs on top, and the rear mount on the cover.

I have an 85 380SE diff at the ranch. I'll try to remember to get a good picture of it next time I'm there.

Brian Carlton knows which rear ends will bolt in.

well i went to 3 pnp's and found an 85 380se and an 84 380 se. they both had the same finned cover rear. looks like they are ABS rears. will this fit my 300CD? they look way different. on a side note one of the pnp's had a early 70's 200 series gasser with a 4 speed. would this tranny fit a 617? the starter was on the passenger side. i would have pulled it regardless but the darn starter had the allen bolt and i didnt have allens with me. i was wondering if it was worth a trip back tomorrow sice they are half price i could get it for $50

here are picyures of the differentials. the first is my 300cd and the second is from a 84 380se. it should be the correct gear but it is quite a bit different then my differential. will this work? it looks like the axles are different and there are bolts on the side of the 380se that mine does not have

In my opinion, it will work. The '84 gasser versions should not have anything different on the subframe as with the '84 diesel versions. But there is always a risk that it will not.

The only thing you'll to change is the yoke and might have to angle the diff downward a little bit.

2.47 diff in 300SD

EDIT: Make sure there are four 19mm bolts on top of the sub frame. Two in front of the diff and two at the rear.

I just checked my '84 500SEL (V8 gasser) and it also has the finned cover... looks exactly like your second picture. Please tell me if this works out, because I really wanted to swap that differential into my 123 wagon.

I will be out of town today but i removed the diff from the pnp 83 380se. i will post a pic of the removed one tomorrow, maybe someone can tell from loking if it is the same. from the description of the 4 bolts above it looks like it will fit fine. i like the look of the finned cover too, i am looking at 5 speed alternatives right now so I may not do the swap if i can get a 5 speed to work.

I think some of the covers are interchangeable. But if you want to take a 3.07 out and put a 2.47 in you MUST have the diff with the 4 studs on top. Yes you do keep your input flange (where the flex disk mounts) from the 3.07 but they just change, not a biggy. The 2.47 diff is a bit bigger (makes sense the gear is bigger), so the input shaft is about 5/8" lower. 5/8" isn't a lot, the flex disks and universal can probably handle it, but what I did was tilt the diff slightly up at the front to point it at the front engine mounts. line it all up in other words. I just used washers as spacers and slightly longer bolts where needed. I spaced the trany mount (AKA rear engine mount) down a bit. The back of the diff mount down a bit, etc. The most spacers I used were for the center input shaft support bearing, and I think I used about 4 or 5 there.

I forgot to mention I had a day of deep concern when I thought the 2.47 diff was wider and I would have trouble with axles. But the sides of the 2.47 are recessed a smidge and width isn't a problem.
