WHOO HOOOO! I'm putting in a 4 Speed!!!

My recent acquisition of an '84 300D with a bad tranny has me deciding to put in the 4Speed I have sitting in the garage... the tranny shop is going to get me a pilot bushing, and I am bringing over the tranny and flywheel. then all I gotta do is measure the drive shaft, and change out the pedals... I should have my 300D running with standard H in a week!

I knew someone who installed a 4-spd stick in a similar car. He said he had to learn how to drive all over again. The turbo tends to make slower shifts necessary, as boost is built up then you want to make a fast shift the revs don't drop down as quickly as you'd like or sormething like that. I never drove the car but it was very peppy compared to the automatic which one has to sort of manually shift in the 123's by letting up on the accelerator to pull a vacuum on the modulator valve, you know the routine. I hope that the driveshaft isn't a problem.
And where do you get the reverse sensing switch for backup lights? No big deal, I'd even consider putting a toggle switch somewhere on the dash for that but thats something to think about if you have ever tried to back out from a parking spot with cars whizzing by it is a little hair raising without any backup lights, not to mention if someone hit you you'd have a liability if they said your lights were not functioning. I know, worry worry! Its just that I've BTDT and wanted to point this out so you can plan on dealing with it before you are too far along on the project. If you had a donor car you can snag everything. There is even a special cruise control module for cars w/ manual trans

The pilot bearing is stock? Avail here and elsewhere. They are doing the work for you? Be careful about the alignment of the DS. What are you doing for the crossmember?

they are just mating the tranny to the engine for me. putting in the pilot bearing and flywheel etc... I get the thrill of figuring out the driveshaft and the pedal assembly installation... I figured I would lose cruise, I didn't think about reverse lights...
the crossmember came with the transmission I got. so it's just got to be installed.

Nah. Drive it like you stole it, as long as the turbo is spooled there is little or no lag during shifts. The shifter has the reverse switch.

If the manual is from a 240D that cross member wont fit. You will also want to use the heavy duty tranny mount. Pedal assembly is a sinch, instead of cramping down there you can get to the bolts with 2-3 extensions coming in parallel to the ground right under the dash. If you look its a straight shot to the bolts. I dont think you have to lose cruise, but mine was missing when I got it. The linkage will have to be adjusted as well. Youll love it when its done and wonder why anyone would drive with an automatic.

240d auto trans cross member bolts right up

make sure they match balance the flywheel to your old flywheel

reverse lights come from the switch on the shifter. follow the auto wire through the tunnel to the inside and unplug it next to the your right knee when your sitting in the driver seat. route the wire for switch from the shifter to this same plug and viola, you have backup lights
