Hoodpad question.....

I just bought myself a new hoodpad for my 1983 300D-T from Fastlane (and for the third time in a row they got me my order within 20 hours, amazing!). I opted for the one with the heat shield, got the hoodpad, and noticed that the heat shield was only a small square. Is this right? If so, what's the effective use of this small shield? It cost me about double what the regular hoodpad would have cost and I just want to know if it was worth the money. I guess even if it's not worth the extra money I'm not going to bother returning it. I'll just cut my loses and take it up the tail pipe. I'm just curious why the heat shield is so small. Thanks everyone!

Alex

Hood pad

Alex,

Can't help you with this one.I've been a Mercedes mechanic for over a qtr century, and I've seen the hood pads with the small silver area. Some one might tell you that it's extra protection for the hood paint.I just went out front and checked an 85 300DT and my 83 300TDT;both hoods are without silver area. The wagon just turned 300,000 miles and the paint is perfect. The 85 has 160K and also perfect.Go figure. Now you have me curious.

Hi Guys,

While I have never even seen a hood pad with a silver (I assume it is reflective with a metallic coating?), I might venture a guess that the reflective portion should be positioned to be directly overhead the turbocharger?

Hmmm...... I haven't installed the pad yet, but I think you might be right. It might be over the hoodpad. It's biased towards the back/front, and left/right. So basically it's pretty much in a corner somewhere (depending on which way the pad is fitted, I haven't checked yet). So I guess it's either the turbo, air intake, brake booster, or nothing (those are the four corner possibilities). I should have just saved my money and bought the traditional pad.

Also, I was on eBay the other day and saw this fiberglass pad that goes behind the engine in between the firewall. Do any of you know about this? I would really like to make my car as quiet as possible and am willing to pay a lot to do so. So, if this fiberglass thing works, does anyone know where I could get my hands on one? Thanks so much!

Good Morning All,

When I "found" my car (82 300D-T) at local dealership, I lifted the hood and the hood pad was falling and disintegrating. After I bought the car. I pulled the pad totally off and plan to get a new one. All that is left intact on mine is the "heat pad". I just checked to see exactly where it fits .. and when you close the hood it's on top of the circular air filter unit.. in other words the turbo.

DieselHead:

I've seen the "Diesel sound shield" many times on Ebay. I'm thinking of making my own, using some aluminium and fiberglass sound absorbing material. All readily available at Home Depot. I'm thinking the project will cost about $25. Cheaper than what that guy is selling on ebay.
