Tell that to the automaker's lawyers. All the safety and creature comfort crap that comes on cars now weigh them down considerably. The only way to get over it is to use more carbon fiber and more efficient engines. The carbon fiber ain't cheap, and the efficient engines are already on the market with more and better coming.

I figure if Toyota and Honda can screw 180hp out of a 4 cylinder that will do low 20's around town, and about 30 on the open road, they can get a 10mpg improvement out of that same engine by say dropping the power output by 50.

And taking some crap out of the car.

At $5 a gallon...yes!

People are going to start to want 30-40 mpg cars.
