It have over 355,700 miles on it witch speedometer dosen't work. However, I took it for repair at Auhaus Benz in Las Vegas today. I will ready like to do a complete over haul. keep my W115 chassic and put a rebuild bulet proof W123 1979 300SD automatic engine, transmission, drive shaft train (RWD) in it. Has anyone done it before and can I do it?

A few things I'd try are skinnyier tires. I'd also look at the front accesory stuff, ie A/C compressor, and the clutch fan. You might try and take the belt off the A/C compressor. There is a guy in TX who has a kit for a newer A/C compressor. You might try an electric fan to replace the present one. On some vehicles, I hear this is about a 3-5 HP increase. That might equate to a 1-2 mpg increase.
I use synthetic grease in the frotn wheel bearings. I plan it for the rear bearings and the rear CV shafts. I'll have to see how the motor runs, if I will use synthetics there. Mine a 4spd manual. I plan to use synthetics there. I put in Royal Purple P/S fuild, too. I have noticed a +2 mpg increase on other cars I drive, by changing to synthetic motor oil.

2 mpg with synthetic oil?

I cannot imagine that much increase unless you were running bear grease before!

more pressure to the tires ( this would obtain better gas milage but wear the middle of your tires faster) how about turning the engine off in nuetral on long downgrades? And I know you said that you don't want to do any body work but eliminating the passenger side (winsows up) of the vehicle and patching the cavity over with sheet metal flush with level of hood back the the trunk would greatly decrease air resistance, ive seen this mod done to a toyota, driver claims he gets 90 mpg.

well, removing the mirror has yielded me a small improvement in fuel efficiency. Before I removed it I would get 23-24 mpg ... now, with the same driving techniques I am getting mid 25's.
I need to borrow my neighbors Garmin so I can use the speedometer function on it since my speedometer is not reliable under 20 mph(I need to lube the cable).

That way I can perform some tests to calculate the coefficient of drag.

Yea I doubt removing the mirror got you that big of an improvement. Something else is different.

Probably just wanting it to show improvement so he's driving more carefully, if a bit subconciously.

.

A small solar trickle charger that will keep the battery charged
so the alternator will not have to.

Or, kick starting the car all of the time, if you have a clutch.

Now you see why they left them off most 240ds!
