I have some left over mercon atf, and no car to use it in. So... how much can I put in per tank. 1 quart per 20 gallons?

Johnhef 05-27-2008 10:30 PM

yeah that wont hurt.

I know of people running on 100% used atf.

If you cant use it, I would give it away on craigslist. I don't think I would pour anything but diesel in the tank of a 99.

On edit, you don't say if its gas or diesel...

None, ATF is not a fuel and it is not designed to be burned in an engine. Take it to a recycling center, most parts stores will accept used oils.

On my 83 I have put in as much as a quart per tank. I have heard that it helps clean the injectors but I couldn't tell the difference. I would only put in unused ATF. I never put any kind of used fluid in my tank because I don't think it is worth the risk. I have 8 or 10 quarts of ATF some one gave me that are unopened so I put some in when I think of it.

quart of diesel costs about a dollar, a 99 e300d in good shape costs how much?? The reason they call it a diesel engine is because it uses diesel fuel, not transmission fluid. I call it the "Risks reward ratio"......what am I risking in comparison to what I have to gain!!!

Craig 05-28-2008 10:16 AM

Give it away, recycle it, whatever; don't put it in your car.

Huh, I thought they called it a OilMotor because it burned oil

:fireman: - flame suit on :D

Seriously though, I have some Toyota ATF left over from an unsuccesful venture into "Oh what a feeling land that I have decided NOT to burn in my engines - doesn't seem like a very good idea for several reasons.

LOL, how about some #5 fuel oil; can I burn that too?

ATF = friction modifiers and dye.

I wouldn't put it in a 99, but the book for one of my W123s (and maybe all of the books) suggest that I fill a replacement fuel filter with ATF before I install it. I use diesel purge, but given the variety of material in biodiesel (virgin, wvo, vvo, etc) I can't imagine modern ATF diluted by that much diesel making any difference at all. As stated, used lubricants are a different story with their suspended metal bits.

Can I use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) as a lubricant in my fuel?
Since October 1993, some diesel end-users have tried adding automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to diesel fuel to improve the fuel's lubricity. According to the U.S. Army's quarterly fuel and lubricant bulletin (March 1994), laboratory testing using the Ball-on-cylinder lubricity evaluation (BOCLE) had shown that the addition of ATF to a low sulfur fuel does not improve the fuel's lubricity rating. Moreover, the presence of ATF in fuel can adversely affect other performance properties of diesel fuel.

If you cant tell the difference then why are you using it?

ATF does NOT belong in the fuel system of ANY CAR. If you want clean injectors use a commercial additive like power service or Diesel Purge.

They refer to vintage 1980 ATF being put into a fuel system with high sulfer diesel. That applies to nothing we do today.

I ran my 300sd on pure ATF DEX III once. I ran the car all the way out of fuel (dc'ed fuel lines and let it run) then stuck the lines in a bottle of ATF. I ran it around the block a few times. No smoke, exhaust smelt almost the same (although I may have a few brain tumors now) and the car sounded the same and drove the same. I could feel more power which I figured was due to btu content.

It was just an expirement and I was trying to troubleshoot a rough idle on the car. I wouldn't recommend it, im just saying that even in a pure state the engine runs perfectly, if not better, on it than diesel fuel. Much better than wvo imo but it probably has the same adverse affects of wvo (leaving ash and other deposits)
