1987 300d idles low, new fuel filters

I was having issues with a low idle and hard starting. It idles at 500 and stumbles and shakes. It seems to run ok once I'm on the fuel.

I replaced the fuel filters tonight and cracked the injector lines to bleed, it took a long time to get fuel to the injector lines and it still started hard once I did.

So I've gotten it started and it still runs just like it did before I did anything with it. When I purchased the car a year ago it started easy and ran great.

could a failed lift pump be causing these issues?

More likely a bad overvoltage protection relay or OVP relay fuse. Could also be a disconnected or damaged wire to the round red plastic thing at the tail end of the injection pump.

Where is the Overvoltage Protection Relay and is the fuse for it marked in the fuse box?

edit... also how many wires running to the red plastic thing on the back of the IP? I checked a 2 wire thing back there and all seems well with it.

Over-voltage relay is behind the cover that is behind the battery.

DOES the tachometer work? Is the ABS lamp on?

IIRC it's a 2-pin connector.

Thumbs up

It could be backwards too... this was the case on my SDL. Or check that rotary knob with the digits for setting idle. I think it's what, No 5 for the 603?

As I recall, the OVP has the fuse mounted on it.

The rotary knob should be set on 4 for the 603 diesel motor.

Tachometer has not worked since I purchased the car... ABS lamp came on when I tried to jump the car because my wife left the key on. What would that indicate? blown OVP fuse?

That could be it!! I know that when my OVP relay went bad on my 86 300sdl, my ABS light came on and my idle speed was way too low. I replaced the fuse and it did not help. I had an extra relay in my stash of parts and popped it in and all was well with the world.
