1987 300D Sedan
Well, I finally bit the bullet & bought one. Only has 115,000 miles & seems in reasonable shape for a 20+ year-old car.
Took it to my local indy MB specialist. He thinks it's in very good condition. He told me that the valves could not be adjusted because this model engine has hydraulic lifters & were not adjustable. He also told me not to use Diesel Purge as it would loosen all of the carbon deposits & it would get in the oil & cause problems. Is there any truth to this? He may be right about the valves, but I don't see the logic on the Diesel Purge. What do you think? |

He is right about the valves but the whole point of a diesel purge is to loosen any carbon deposits.

Thats what I thought. I'll be getting the car back from him today (after he removes the speedo to send off for repair). I'll be doing the diesel purge tomorrow - weather permitting.
Thanks for the reply!! |

After the diesel purge, a short time after you might want to change the oil if your worried about carbon deposits.

I just DP'd mine (92 300D) last night, and it was darn near black about halfway through the bottle! I might run a second bottle through just for good measure! Power off idle *seems* better, and I feel better knowing all that mess that blackened the DP is cleaned out of the system. I do plan to change my oil very shortly, though.

Just changed my oil last week, so that's gonna have to wait a while. Used Amsoil, so the expense of changing now won't allow for immediate change.
Any of you guys had the carbon build-up problem in the oil after running diesel purge? |

What is wrong with the speedo?

Does your mechanic know what Diesel Purge is? What does Diesel Purge have to do with engine oil? He might be thinking of a crank case flushing agent or switching to synthetic engine oil.

The odometer quit on it. The guy has someone in the NY area that he sends speedos off for repair. Should be back early next week.
I would try to do it myself, but I couldn't even get the damn thing out of the dash...... Sixto: Yeah, he knows what it is. He just doesn't like it. Remember he's a MB-trained guy & doesn't like to kick the traces. |

My thought exactly.
It's fairly rare to find one of these with such low miles, people bought them in diesels because they drove lots of miles.

It quit about 100 miles ago. Shop says they will keep the mileage as-is on the odo when they fix it. Should be in early next week
Did a diesel purge today. It really helped the sound of the engine, but the fluid stayed pretty clear. Apparently it wasn't as gunked up as I thought. It nails & blows blue smoke on first startup, but clears in about 2-3 minutes. Maybe a GP problem or injector? Could it also be that the cylinders are stone cold & it's just unburnt fuel? |

Thanks for the link,
such things are of interest to me. have heard of guys using small amounts of acetone and some other stuff to do similar. So far i just been wakin in some injector cleaner every few tanks, half of the bottle to quater tank and the other half next tank. fancy it works but i could imagine it the car always goes well.
