22mpg in a 240- can I do better?
My son clocked his milage at 22 today. It's a 240 D automatic. Aside from clean air filters, tire inflation, and good driving habits, can I do something to tweak the IP or check the timing of it to possibly increase the milage? He does 1/2 of his driving on short trips to and from school and the engine doesn't have time to warm up properly. What are some other's 240 milage claims?

For mixed driving that sounds pretty good actually.
i would expect about 17 18 around town and 23 to 25 max highway with a slushbox. Tom W

Yes, for short trips on a cold engine with an automatic 22mpg is good. Highschool guys aren't known for good driving skills, especially with a low power car. Most will treat the thorttle as an on/off switch no matter what you do.

That applies to pretty much EVERY 240D driving situation. It's the only way you can drive it and not get flattened by a semi.

half throttle , full throttle its not much difference.
The throttle in a 240d, especially the automatics is more like a placebo thermostat! Tom W

Fuel lubricity makes no difference in economy.

I agree, I almost never go past about 1/2 or 3/4 throttle on the 240. You can feel when it's out of power, more peddle doesn't do anything except make a little extra noise. The only exception is a long highway hill where it will eventually wind out that last little bit of power/speed.

Of course it does! It reduces friction. My idle went up once it got through the tank and flushed all the dino out. That only happens when friction is being reduced. Reduced friction= better fuel economy.

The best economy I ever got in my TDI was when I was running 5% bio. Got 56.3 that tank...
EDIT: But now that I think about it that doesn't have much to do with the inline pumps on our Benzes as they are lubricated by the engine oil, not the fuel like the rotary pumps fitted to VWs. -Jason

Reduced friction= better fuel economy is true but not measurably from the fuel. The fuel's lubrication quality affects pump and injector wear. |
