Quick question - I know of a '79 300CD for sale, but neglected to ask the owner if it's a turbo or NA engine. Can anyone tell me for sure if it's one way or the other (turbo or NA) based on the year and model?

The '81 TDs were turbos. Apparently there were also a small number of CD turbos during the 81 model year.

Notice that my initial response did not mention a specific year, to avoid starting this debate.

nope, both the CD and the TD got the turbo in 81...

OP, not only will this be a N/A motor, it will most likely have series style large Glow plugs.
if you get it, upgrade it to pencil style asap. (approx 150.00)

Incorrect. Only the 300TD got the turbo in 81. Some 300CD's were MADE in 81 with the turbo but they were sold as 82 model year cars.

Somebody had a build chart one time that showed the different models years with chassis style and engine and production years. Anybody save that or have a link to it?
It clearly showed the '81 CD to have some with the turbo, but it would be interesting to see what it said, if anything, about build date vs production year.
