Measuring rpm's??? - OM617 non-turbo engine

I am trying to 'fine tune' my idle speed on my '78 300D - does anyone know how to measure rpm's on this car? The FSM shows a "revolution counter", which I don't have, and even if I did, I don't know where to connect it???

Any way to hook up a tach?

Thanks,
Ryan

Its not critical that you get it exact, just set it as low as it will smoothly run. I always do the adjustment while the engine is running.

Since there is no electronic ignition on a diesel there is no where unless the factory provides one to easily hook up a tach.
There are tachometers that mechanics use that have little reflective pieces of tape that you stick on to lets say the Crankshaft Damper. The device projects a light that reflects off of the reflective tape back to the unit and which gives you a readout of the rpms.
Another type uses a strobe light that flashes however many times a minute you set it for. You put a white chalk mark on the part you want to know the rpms of. You focus the light on it and you keep turning the dial on the unit until the chalk mark appears to stand still. Then you look at the unit and read the rpm that the mark stands still at. The advantage of this unit is that no light has to be reflected back to the unit and recieved by the unit to show the rpm but it is freaky to use (watching the flashing lights gives me a headache) and the accuracy can vary with the preception of the user.
Here is on on Ebay:

This one cost less but I cannot tell if it used tape or not.
