My grill was stolen, and they got my star

Got to my girlfriends house last night, was getting out of my car and noticed about 6 teenage guys of questionable character were walking by, (normally i just leave my car as is) but thought i should get my laptop out and actually lock it. I just got done locking it when one said in ghetto talk something along the lines of "Man thats a nice Jaguar" to which another said "dumb racial slur it a Benz" i laughed and said yeah its a benz, told them it ran off vegetable oil and kept walking. Got inside and fell asleep. Woke up this morning walked out and my whole grill was gone. Notfhing i could do about it, went to work and on my way out of the apt complex found the pieces to the shell and no sign of the star only a broken dream.

Does anyone have one they want to give me? Or do any of the Dallas guys know of one at a salvage yard that i could grab this weekend.

Don't they need to open the hood to access the bolts holding the grille on? or did the yjust rip it off and toast the hood too? I'd drive in a different car they don't know, hide somewhereand wait for the little terds to show up, lay a flurry of quite painful rubber bullets into them, and they'll have no clue, but get the idea they're not welcome. Probably illegal as all, but quite satisfying...
Then, If that'd happened to me I wouldn't have just left the car sitting there unattended in the first place.....

Go get them

Oh my God! People of color? Gee, that's never happened before.

I don't put up with theives. If they were walking in that area, then I'm guessing they live in that area. If I were you, I'd go looking for them. Go around the same time of day. You're likely to get more info on who did it from one, than them as a group, but you never know. I wouldn't put it past me to follow one of them home, hide something of theirs when they're not looking like they did to you, and suggest you might find their item, if they can find yours; a trade.

Or, be normal, find one of them, then contact police to see if you can get the answer you want. But who would admit they stole something to a policeman?

Good luck.

Man, I'd hunt them down. I've had my star stolen, and that alone made me quite angry. But the whole grill!

I've also had someone at my former workplace key the **** out of my drivers side fender and both doors with a flat head screw driver. First they smacked it (made a screw driver shaped dent all the way through the paint) and then dragged it along the car most of the way and took the paint off down to the metal! I'd have beat them with a pipe if I had seen it take place.

I had someone try to rip the antenna out of my SL, and its a rare WORKING ANTENNA. My college was hosting regional track meets for area high schools, and I was trying to ease my way through the crowd so I could park for class. Apparently some ignorant redneck thought it would be funny to attempt to rip my antenna out, and pretend it wasn't him.

Obviously, I instinctively bolted out the car planning to clobber this guy, but thankfully a coach saw the entire thing happen, and confronted him before I did.

After examining the antenna and finding no damage, the coach forced this little prick to apologize to me, which he did half heartedly. Then, much to my satisfaction, the coached reamed him, explaining how big of a dumba$$ he was, and that the antenna on that Mercedes probably costs more to replace than your car is worth.

That was the last time I drove my SL to class.

That's pretty messed up - to rip the whole grill off and smash it just to steal the star. Some people's kids need a beating or two - the ones mommy & daddy never gave them when they were little to teach them how to behave themselves.

Personally I was pretty surprised when I first discovered that the whole grill is one big piece of plastic with only a few small of pieces of chromed metal trim. I can see where it would be pretty easy to grab hold of it at the bottom corners and rip it off pretty cleanly.

Somehow I expected more from a 20 year old Benz. Like an all aluminum grill assembly with a few small pieces of chrome trim - or something...

However, since it is all insulating plastic with metal trim bars, you could always hook up an electric fence type unit to the metal bars. That would give the little b@$t@rds a nasty surprise if they dared lay a hand on it again!

Hopefully some of you don't have jobs with any degree of authority....

......did the original poster say he actually SAW these guys still his grille/star?

Wow, talk about jumping to conclusions. Maybe it was a crappy neighborhood and it was a DIFFERENT set of punks who jacked his car.

Maybe they were even white?

Get a paintball gun and a brand new shiny star and park it while hiding out behind a tree. Blast those effers when they come around. Paul

I have a 79 and an 80 123 parts cars, both with intact grills, although not in the highest condition... if you are interested in them, I could take some pix and email them to ya...

and HEY knock it off with racial prejudice! those kids walking by may have been stupid to mistake it for a jag, but that does not mean THEY took it. they may have been talking about the car at a hangout, and some low life of any color or nationality could have swiped it. it's also possible that your ex girlfriend may have followed you and decided to give you some payback...
or even the girl you were with's ex boyfriend...

I like the hotwiring the grille method. the paint ball method sounds like a way to get killed... they might not have paint in their guns... video cameras in the car with IR lighting would be good to capture the faces of the next thieves ....
