126 Custom Exhaust

Has anybody ever thought about doing a custom exhaust job for a 126 diesel? Or maybe just a larger down pipe? Does anybody think there would be any performance/mpg benefit or am I just dreaming here.

I'd just like to hear everybody's thoughts.

Thanks!

I think the biggest benefit would be the turbo would probably spool up sooner and quicker.

That would be the only benefit. You won't gain any MPG or power, just noise.

Faster spool is more usable power.

It would get louder which since its a 120hp luxury car would be kind of pointless.

If he just put an after market exhaust on it would probably just sound "nice". I know my muffler could use replacement.

I replaced the exhaust system on my SD, I did not replace the resonators, straight pipe, stock size, back to a stock muffler. When the turbo comes on, I can hear the exhaust as being more pronounced, I have noticed any performance difference.

I guess to each their own, I have no desire to listen to the engine its not a sports car. I only want to hear it a bit when I get on it than nothing at normal RPM's, MB does this wonderfully with their stock system.

For replacement I recomend a stainless system from Timevalve or whatever they are called.

If it was an AMG than well thats different.

exhaust ........

I have a 91 350SD Turbo ......
Yes I custom bent a 3" pipe all the way back with a stainless flo-through muffler.
Its not loud at all …. However it does feel like it has more power... I'm at 32 -34 MPG on the highway
BTW I also ….
-calibrated the injectors so they all “pop” at the same pressure…
-removed the ADLA on top of the injector pump
-Adjusted the Waste gate for a little more boost
-Set the timing. 2-3 degrees advanced (replaced the timing chain as well)
-Installed 16 in custom rims ant tires…..
The 350SD….It’s a great car.....

cut the actuating rod in half ...threaded both sections an installed a turn buckle..
Can easily be lengthened or shortened...

Anthony,

What muffler did you use? Does anyone have experience using Borla?

I have had a straight pipe (2.5") for almost a year now.....and it doesn't bother me at all....you can tell its louder with the windows down, and can hear the deeper tones in the car a little more....but its insignificant, and I like it.

2.5" pipe from the turbo to the back of the car.
