Do I need a new mufflers? 365,000 miles 300SD
I've got the exhaust system out for driveshaft work. It's been loud for at least 100,000 miles, but shows no signs (externally) of needing replacement. All one piece, welded together, it's a silver color except the short pipes near the front pair of mufflers (they're rusty). I bought the car new so I know it's original. And it weighs a ton--probably 75 pounds.
Questions: 1. could it be full of soot? What does a new system weigh? 2. can I test the flow somehow? 3. should I replace it or just put it back in? -Thanks. |

You're the first owner of that car? You rule. How's everything working for you after this long?

Sounds like you may have a pinhole leak from the rusty part. You usually test for that with the exhaust on the car, but since you have it out, I guess you could plug the end, stand it up and fill it with water to see if it leaks.
I don't know what a new 300SD exhaust system weighs. If it's full of soot, you should be having problems with poor fuel economy and/or poor performance. Unless it's plugged up, you won't hurt anything by putting the system back on and continuing to drive. NOT putting the system back on and continuing to drive might be more fun, though local law enforcement may disagree.

Thanks. I call it my economy car. No other vehicle has taken me so far for so cheap. Second engine and transmission (mostly because of bad advise). I rebuilt the front and rear suspension some years ago...new steering too. Only major issue now is injection--I'm thinking of pulling the pump and injectors and sending them in for rebuild. I guess you could plug the end, stand it up and fill it with water to see if it leaks. Now, that's a new one for me! It could be that the noise was coming from the driveshaft, which I now have out for repair...the front flex disk was shot and the center bearing carrier as well. I did fire it up with just the downpipe out of the turbo and it really wasn't very loud. So, naturally, I'll have to drive it around a bit before putting the exhaust back on. Considering a straight pipe, but I like it quiet, so will probably end up with a muffler again. |

if you have some extra money laying around now might be the time to check on stainless 3" pipes and a simple resonance exhaust... probably set you back 1200 or so... eitherway, enjoy that sucker!
was the replacement engine new/rebuilt or a pull from donor? how long ago on the replacement? 365K is quite a long time on these cars.
