Glow plug dash light blinking...

...So when I get ready to warm the plugs up to start the car, the dash light starts blinking. Is that a bad relay or do I have a bad glow plug? And this is for a 1980 300SD.

I suppose the filiment in the bulb could be having problems or a loose/poor ground somewhere, but I think you will end up having to do a check of the Glow Plug system.

Do Benzes have any kind of water separator on them? (besides the one on the fuel filter)

Glow and H2O

Diesel Giant has a "Glow System" test sequence on his web site.

No other water separator,Unless some genius PO has replaced the stock
secondary with a WS equipped Racor unit!(Bleed the H2O out and be warned
electronically when it's time to!)

I'll check out D. Giant's test. Funny thing is now it's working just fine. It has been an intermittent issue for a while just gotten worse lately. Did a visual and no corrosion on the terminals and the "fuse" link looks good and tight. Thanks!

Reason I asked is the 2nd generation golf / jetta diesels are equipped with a (rather large!) separator unit by the fuel tank, and when it gets water in it the glow plug light will flash.

Nope, nothing like that on these cars, but it sounds like a good idea.

nod nod blink blink

blinking tells you that something is going south but NOT how fast.

mine blinked periodically for years until finally the relay went out (after I had the plugs replaced).

get ready.

There is no specific water separator just the plastic filter fuel filter and the seconday spin on fuel filter.
However Deliveryvalve and I are about to finish up on modifications to the stock filter housing so that a lower Micron, longer filter with a drain on the bottom can be used. I believe Deliveryvalve said the filter media inside of the filter is designed tor repel water.
Here is the thread where we posted the information concerning what we are doing. He is shiping me the parts so that I can modify them. Also there is info from other members concerning using a Staynadyne water separator.
Lowest Fuel Filter Micron Rating

Also in this thread is my setup (that is on my car right now) to mount a (NAPA 3528) 2 Nominal Micron filter (the stock filters are 10 Nominal Microns) in place of the stock secondary spinon filterwhich is a large filter but has no drain. I found out that the CAT version (1R-0750) of the filter I am using is a 2 Micron Absolute filter an I have one comming from Ebay to replace the NAPA filter.
