Fuel filter under tank?
 

I was bleeding the brakes on my '83 300sd and saw a fuel filter directly below the tank. It was one of the little plastic ones and it looked very old. Was this a factory filter? I sure would hate to try changing that when it clogs in rush hour traffic.

Not factory unless you're talking about the screen within the tank.

There is a strainer IN the tank but there should only be a rubber hose between that and the metal line.

I can't believe someone put a filter there. I guess I'll just pull it off and punch holes through it and put it back on.
