Rebuild of the tandem power steering/SLS pump on a 1987 300TDT W124?

Has anyone ever rebuilt a tandem power steering/SLS pump that is used on a 1987 300TDT (W124)? I believe it also was used later W124 wagons as well as some other "S" class models. I got a quote for a rebuild from my local indy mechanic and it was over $700 dollars. A unit from a dealership was priced out at over $900. I did find one link for a person that owned a 1991 350SDL who rebuilt their pump.

Tandem Power Steering Pump Rebuild

I'm trying to decide if I want to attempt to rebuild the pump myself or let a mechanic do it. I need to look in the FSM and see if there is a procedure as well. I'm curious as to how long it would take and if the parts are readily available. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

-Steve
