I like mine. Comfy, has power, gets 31mpg consistently on my 110 mile commute and engine is proving very reliable although prone to fuel leaks whenever new fuel blends are introduced. Viton orings on fuel lines helps in that regard.

Check the normal things: rusty spring perches, AC system, LCA bushings, etc.

Relative to the condition you intend to keep it in and who is going to do the work. Dealer is certainly going to cost more than doing it yourself.

Couple of other common W210 issues: window regulators, k 40 relays, MAF's,.

The most treacherous 606 issue is probably broken off glow plugs. Not any harder to work on that a 617 and theres a computer to help point you in the right direction when needed.

Strongest, safest, etc diesel other than the newer CDI's.

At 100k it will need some work undoubtedly: oring seals at fuel lines and DV's, prob a K40 relay. Mostly nagging stuff from not being driven much. Once in order very reliable.

If in nice condition with maint records, is prob worth $12-14K.....

99 w210 TD

Thumbs up definitely on this type of ride. Engine is strong. Had my MAF replaced last summer. Agree with TMAllison on things to check - rusty spring perches, check for leaking fule lines too. Never had a glow plug issue on mine but it only has 50k miles so far.

The NA 606 is much more powerful than the turbo 617 as it is. I've never driven one with a turbocharger.

The turbo hauls ass compared to the NA version. I'd say the NA OM606's performance is about the same as that of an OM617 turbo (slightly more horsepower but slightly less torque, better mileage though). If it weren't for my traumatizing experience with the spring perches and the fear of having to go through that again I'd trade my 606 for a turbo version. But with the spring perches, fuel leaks and control arm bushings I'd rather shell out the extra bucks for a CDI.

Ya me too, been doing it that way for years. Some people just don't get why we do it, others get jealous and start doing it too.

So benzman, did you pickup that vehicle yet?

There's nothing new about buying wrecks and fixing them, people have been doing it forever. The problem is with people who don't disclose the history when they know a car's been wrecked and sell it as though it hasn't. Not all accidents and totals get reported so lots of cars with substantial damage to them (from wrecks or floods) land up in the hands of unsuscpecting buyers who then wonder why their cars have all sorts of mysterious problems. Fact is no wrecked car will ever be as good as it was before the accident, period. There will always be issues that come up, maybe months or years later resulting from the repairs done and that's why when a former wreck comes up for sale with a known history you can't hardly sell it.
