Vacuum, Brakes and Smokin'
Working on the FL car today, Tom wants to drive it more, and am doing brakes, trying to get it to smoke less and checkin out the vacuum.
Brakes: all four brakes look fine, decent pads but front has non-vented rotors. Should they be vented? Should I change them next time the pads need done? Also, the 'Y' vacuum had a tube off, the one that goes directly into the booster. Seemed to make the brakes a bit less 'hard'. But still not as good as I think they need to be. Anything I should look at now? Changing brake fluid? Vacuum: the yellow 3 way, 1 on top and 2 on the bottom, the two bottom are not plugged in and are even topped off. What do they do, go to and should I replug them into where they obviously go? Two pack a day smoker. Tried adjusting ALDA but since the smoke is white it's not black, adjusting did nothing for smoking. Not losing oil, still leaking but not like it was on the trip. White smoke means burning oil, right? So the amount of smoke that I see is the car using the oil as fuel? It's REALLY bad. And embarrassing, too. Oh, and I need to know everything about the NSS. How do I fix it? What does it do that makes the car have to be in N to start? Thanks for the help!

White smoke is often water, sometimes it is fuel. Water vapor usually dissipates quickly, smoke does not.
If it is smoke/fuel, likely you have an injector problem or compression problem. I'm not sure, but think white smoke can also be from retarded injection timing, someone will know that one better than I.

White smoke could be burning coolant. Have you had to add any coolant lately?

Bleed the brakes.
Do your doors lock? Check the coolant for an irridescent look, or the oil for a light colored, creamy quality.

Doors don't lock.
Will try bleeding the brakes. Haven't had to add any coolant, oil looks like oil and coolant like coolant.

The yellow vacuum valve splits to the door and the vacuum reservoir tank in the trunk.
Have you been blending vegetable oil at all?

nope, no veggie in this tank yet. So should I go ahead and reconnect the yellow vacuum? And why would anyone disconnect them in the first place???

Bump.
At least talk to me about the vacuum. Why would the yellow line be disconnected?

10:1 odds that someone disconnected the vacuum lines due to a leak in the locking system. If you lose too much vacuum anywhere you can start running into shifting problems, problems with the car not turning off or even braking problems. Best thing to do would be to get a hand vacuum pump (Mighty Vac or similar) and pull a vacuum on each of those two lines and see if they hold the vacuum or if it leaks down.

Block off all of the vacuum feeds from the main line and I bet your brakes will be fine. It's usually a vacuum leak.
Also a valve job will do wonders if it wasn't done in a while. This might even clear up the smoke. |

The yellow line leads to the master lock in the driver's door.
The yellow line with grey stripe leads to the reservoir tank in the trunk (takes a lot of pumping with a mityvac). (And I'd put the odds at more like 100:1 that one of the door actuators is leaking.) You'll probably want to dig up a vac diagram for your car. I'm sure there is one on this site. A valve adjustment is a good idea. A light amount of light-colored smoke on start-up can also be caused by worn valve stem seals. How thick and how white is the smoke? And how long does it last?
