Hard to turn water pump (OM603)
While installing a new vacuum pump on my '87 300D-T (W124, OM603) today, I had the serpentine belt loose and so spun all the pulleys to see what shape they were in. Everything appeared OK except that the water pump doesn't spin freely. I can turn it by hand without difficulty, just not as free as I expected.
The bearings are tight and there's no play in the pulley nor is there any noise when I rotate the pulley. There were no "bad noises" from the engine when it was running just before I took it apart. No sign of coolant leaks and no cooling problems. The water pump was replaced by my indy (along with the belt and tensioner) in January 2007 (5000 miles ago) so it should be good. I haven't fondled a water pump in many years and never on a Mercedes so it may simply be inexperience on my part. Any words of wisdom from the initiated would be appreciated. Jeremy

Let it be.
Diesels are pretty easy on water pumps, you might just be feeling the packing causing a bit of a drag. Jim
