Are transistors powerful enough to directly drive an LED? (They might be, I don't know.) A normally-closed relay would work also.

a small signal transistor may be but a Darlington Pair should achieve the needed current just fine

100mA.... most LEDs pull 20mA at rated brightness. You can get 3904/3906 transistors at Radioshack.
