I've heard of the batteries going out fairly early on the manual hybrids (the Insight and Civic) but not the automatics. Also last time I checked the Prius has excellent crash test ratings just like all the other new cars. Would I buy a Prius for myself? Nah, too ugly and I prefer the sound and torque of a diesel.

To my surprise I actually got 46 MPG on my last tank. Must be the slower driving on the freeway that I've been doing lately (around 70 mph). That's even better than what I used to get in my Civic Hybrid.

Yes that is darn good. We can get around 45mpg at 65mph. Any faster and it falls off. I've been getting 50mpg with my city trips, on the rare occasions that I drive it.

Is the 45 mpg from the car's computer or from your calculations? I remember on my '03 Civic Hybrid the computer was consistently about 2 mpg too optimistic. 50 mpg in city traffic is really great and that's where the hybrids shine. But for highway travel I think diesels give more optimal performance.

We have averaged 45mpg for 12,000 miles with the car since new. The mileage is improving with the warmer weather. I agree, a diesel will do better on the highway than a gas or gas hybrid. As you know, the electric motor doesn't do much for you at highway speeds. I really want a diesel hybrid, but may settle for a diesel Honda Accord.

I too feel that the hybrids are just a passing phase. I think that if we do see a diesel hybrid (even in a very limited release), that it won't be until manufacturers are pressed with even high MPG requirements. After all, why would you roll out your best cards at the begining of the card game?

I think the diesel Accord will be awesome. I'm also keeping my eye on the new Jetta TDI that's coming this fall and the BMW 3-series diesel which I'm not sure is coming. I think the BMW would be my first choice among all the new diesels if I were to get one. New Mercedes diesels like the Bluetec are nice too, but a bit too pricey.
