Questions about 83 300SD

What exactly separates the 'SD' from the other models? A buddy of mine has an 81 300D and we're trying to determine what exactly the differences are in terms of engine/drivetrain so that we can be better prepared for working on it. He's becoming pretty familiar with his car and we're not sure how much of that knowledge can be applied to mine. Does anyone have any insight?

Pretty much all the knowledge can be applied. The main difference is obviously the chassis and the presence of a turbo on your car. Otherwise the cars are pretty much identical.

Just bigger really. And the double firewall makes it a bit quieter inside. Whenever my left rear wheel bearing isn't humming, I'm amazed at how quiet it still is.

I see. Awesome, well thanks guys, that's pretty good news. Does that also mean that if I got a repair manual for W123 that it would be useful for my vehicle? Because it seems the W126 manuals are less common.

Not so much, for certian things it would help though.

The engine and trans are just about the same, but its a different car. Similer but different.

I think the 81 300D has the older style automatic climate control system (vertically arranged buttons) vs the later style on your car that the 300D adopted in 82. The differences go beyond the arrangement of control buttons.

I mean honestly as long as the differences are mostly outside of engine/drivetrain issues, that would be just fine with me, considering issues with the rest of the car are completely secondary at this point in the game. I am not expecting a lot of the interior features to work to be honest. And uh, right now I don't really care

But thanks a lot! It really helps.
