Early Range Rovers used a VM diesel.

In any event, Roger Penske has at one time owned VM and Detroit Diesel, but now it appears Daimler owns VM and Chrysler owns Detroit. Now maybe GM owns it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VM_Motori
I'm not sure who owns who at this point, but I thought I read something recently where Daimler sold their stake in VM, or part of it, to GM.

It looks like a bunch of post-purchase "WTF was I thinking" cases.

Except that it does not have a VNT turbo, which all US Liberty CRDs do.

Yes that is correct, all 2005+ MY KJs, both US and international, use the VGT/VNT turbo. Additionally you will notice in that picture the EGR setup is different than the US, as well as the CCV.

It is also noteworthy that this engine uses a bosch EDC15 ecu compared to the 05+ with the EDC16.

I go could on listing some other minor differences between this generation of engine(2002-2004) and the 2005-2007 KJ, but I posted the picture merely for identification purposes.

Hence, it is very similar to the US engine, but not the same, and only the trained eye such as yours will pickup on the differences.
