Oil filter housing gasket replacment - without motor mount removal?

I replaced the oil cooler lines 3 months ago on my 1984 300td, so they are fine. I need to change the gasket between the oil filter housing and the block. Can this be done WITHOUT removing the motor mount?

There is a bolt that is really long and comes in close contact with the inner fender, thats what I am worried about. The same one that requires a hex key cut down to fit.

P.S. The reason I didnt mess with the oil filter housing gasket when I did the oil cooler lines is because I couldnt get a hex key or socket, etc. into that tight spot. Now I have the "special tool".

Have you tried tightening the bolts on the oil filter housing? I have fixed leaks using that method.

I don't know if there is a big difference between the SD and the TD but I replaced my oil filter housing gaskets on my 83 300SD without any issues. After the oil lines are removed it was very easy.

Are you having problems with the bolt that is right next to the power steering pump? Just cut an allen wrench down to fit. This bolt is usually not to tight. You might want to just try giving them all a little tightening and see if that fixes the leak.

Yes, I tried to tighten the bolts, unfortuantly it didnt do anything.

I have the "special" hex key now, I just dont want to start undoing everything to find out I have to undo the motor mount again. Its a brand new motor mount (genuine benz) with new bolts. If it aint broke, I dont want to mess with it.

Yes I am talking about the one by the steering box.

it can be done with just normal allen wrenches. Try to get the ones with the all end so you can work on an angle.

I'm sure you meant "ball end." Isn't it easy enough to strip a socket head bolt with a conventional allen bit?

I dont trust the ball ends. Just go ahead with a specially appropriated one. I had to grind down a 14mm this weekend for my tranny.

Why would you need to remove the engine mount? There is ample room around the housing to R&R the gasket and the only thing you need to go under the car for is 2 bolts that are difficult to reach from the top.

That gasket is not an amazing/special job, its about a 1 hour job and you only need 3 tools.
5mm allen key
27mm (1-1/16") oil cooler line wrench
Gasket scraper

Is there a procedure in the manual to do this? tried looking under the Engine Lubrication section and found nothing pertinent.

18-110

PS those maybe 24mm? You will need to grind the allen key down to get the one in the middle and a small cheater bar may help.
