Gauge Help...Bad Ground?!?

'87 SDL

Here's some history... oil pressure gauge stopped working some time ago, which originally scared the BLEEP out of me until I realized it was just the gauge. Now I've got the low fuel warning light on all the time, the fuel gauge has started randomly moving around and even the digital air temp window zones out sometimes.

So I read that I may have a bad ground... So I picked a screw on the back panel and grounded the whole cluster. it's a good ground. However now all the gauges peg to the top, including the coolant temperature gauge which had been working.

So assuming this is still a ground problem, which I think it is... How do I know where to ground from? Should I try and get straight to the gauges themselves instead of the back of the cluster?

Thanks,
Bill

Better to go back into the cluster and identify the factory ground. Check for continuity on the board and duplicate the ground if suspicious. It sounds like you grounded something that was not meant to be part of the ground circuit.

Clean the ground up well where it connects to the body from the cluster if it does. Also make sure your body ground is clean at both ends. Remove and clean and add a little grease to help prevent oxidation. The body to engine ground located near the starter is a good candidate to keep clean as well. Since your starter spins well it is probably ok but might have some resistance.
