Trouble removing old cooler lines...

I got the car on ramps in my garage. I finally got all the hex bolts out of both engine mounts and got the engine shocks removed on both sides.

The oil cooler lines are disconnected on 4 ends.

I've disconnected throttle linkage and the fan shroud. I've placed a 4x6 block of wood under the oil pan and begin to jack up the engine hoping to free the engine mount so I can remove the old oil lines. Thing is that I've jacked up the engine pretty far but the engine bearer still rests on the mounts - I'm afraid to jack it up any further - don't want to overdo it...

Looking at the mounts I would have to raise the engine another 1 or 2 inches (or more) to free the mount. Is there any risk in jacking it TOO far up - I have horrible visions of damaging something in the drive train...

Any comments, advice are welcome.

Which model?

I had to remove the mount bracket from the block on the W126.
Make note of the order and how the old lines come out. New lines will go in reverse. I had several days pass and it took longer for me to thread the new lines in than removing the old.

edit: I just noticed the W123.

Yeah, it's been 2 days and counting... I'm taking my time because I don't know what the heck I'm doing... if I can take out that engine mount I think I will have a chance - will keep you posted.

When I did the oil cooler lines on my car I jacked up the engine (with a piece of 2x8 under the oil pan) and suddenly the oil pan started to bend so I stopped. I finally found a way to get the new lines in with out removing the engine mounts.

Wish I could find a way to do it without removing mounts - got one of them out last night (upper)... but the other one is being difficult - spent at least an hour last night trying...

You can raise the Engine only to the extent that the Motor Mounts were compressed and a little more to stretch them. After that you are trying to lift the whole car. (There is a dent in my Oil Pan Left by the PO.)

If you need more room I believe the large Motor Mount Blots need to be loosened or removed.

Maybe that was what was going on but I had the mounts unbolted and never saw enough clearance to remove them so I cut the old oil lines to get them out and then after a LOT of fiddling around and a LOT of expletives I got the new lines in. When I did this project I put some large pieces of card board under the car incase of any oil drips, by the time I finished it looked like the Exon Valdez had been there. I think it took almost as long to clean up the mess as to do the job

When I did mine, I pretty much did as you listed in post#1.
I cut the hoses with a pair of loppers, loosened turned the bottom hose to drain the cooler into a pan.

removed the 2 large bolts from the bottom of the mounts, raised the engine. then had the bright idea to remove the eng mount arm. but the power steering hose was in the way, so removed it off the steering box. be sure to have a pan under it (don`t ask). fluid needed changed anyway.

After I removed the arm, it was a piece of cake. seems like one hose comes in from the rear, and the other was easier to get in from the front.

Use anti Sieze compound on the threads.

this is one of those PITA jobs that is a piece of cake once you are through. Oh yeah, be sure to install a new filter in the power steering reservor.

Got the mounts replaced...

Thanks for the tip on how how high I can lift the engine up - it worked real well and now I have two new engine mounts in place and two new engine shocks - it wasn't too bad. Struggled a bit with the 6mm bolts behind the mount but finally got it (somehow at the end).

Turns out that the old mounts and shocks were not really worn out - looks like the PO had replaced them but didn't tell me. I replaced them because I had it apart anyway to replace the oil cooler lines so I figured might as well.

But now I have two slightly used mounts and two slightly used engine shocks - if you're interested in them send me a PM.

THx again for all the advice -
