Air in cooling system?

I just did a cooling system flush on my 300D. I cant seem to get much fluid in now and the upper rad hose has little or no fluid in it at idle, rev, or off. When I loosen the drain plug only a small amount of fluid drains out and the reservoir does not drain. What the hell? I tried burping it by putting it on ramps and holding it about 3k. The reservoir rapidly drops in level until its empty (its only half full) but once I stop revving it it refills and there still air in the rad hose. I don't think theres that much fluid in the system. Maybe there is and im just confused. Shouldn't there be fluid still in the hose when the engines off? Because there is only a little (confirmed by removing the hose). My sd has sat for days and has a full hose. And Ive squessed the hose on this car before and felt liquid. The weird thing is it still runs nice and cool. I just drove it around town and even did 80 on the freeway and it held right at 80 like before. Any ideas?

When I did my '87 300D a few days ago, I disconnected the upper radiator hose from the radiator and poured most of a gallon (50-50 M-B coolant and distilled water) into the engine (using a funnel). Then I moved the upper radiator hose to the radiator and poured most of a second gallon into the radiator. Then I reconnected the upper radiator hose at both ends and started the engine. While the engine idled, I poured the remaining fluid into the plastic tank. I turned the heat on max and waited until the thermostat opened and I got heat in the passenger compartment, indicating that the bubble of air in the heater core was out. After a couple of days, I again topped up the plastic tank.

I agree, fill the radiator through the tank with the upper hose disconnected, then fill the upper hose, turn on the heat and run the engine until it heats up.

Well after I did some errands in it with just the straight water I came back, drove back up on the ramps and proceeded to remove the drain plug for the rad. This time the coolant level dropped which is a good sign. I then poured in a gallon of MBZ coolant (30/gallon now from the dealer) and the car took it all and didn't regurgitate it when I shut it off. I then filled the remaining volume with water. There is now water in the rad hose and everything seems to be fine.

I also changed the oil and fixed a small oil leak

I was reading the 85 Mercedes Benz USA maintence manual I have and it says coolant in a 617.952 should be mixed 5.5:7
